On the board in seven of 10 starts, Reinvestment Risk won twice and earned $415,980. Reinvestment Risk will stand alongside 2014 GIII Sham S. winner Midnight Hawk (Midnight Lute)...

Classic Bases Loaded for Sire On The Up

Nobody has missed the explosive impact of Not This Time's second crop of sophomores on the Classic trail this year. But the fact remains that it's actually another stallion in his own intake that we find flirting most plausibly with an elusive distinction, with a chance of joining King Alfonso (1885), McGee (1918), Bull Lea (1952) and Native Dancer (1966) in siring the winners of both the GI Kentucky Derby and GI Kentucky Oaks. Okay, so we're getting way ahead of ourselves here. With nearly two months to go, it...

Jackie's Warrior Meets 'Rising Star' Pair in Hopeful

With the obvious caveat that anything can happen with 2-year-olds this early in their development--look no further than Sittin On Go (Brody's Cause)'s 24-1 upset in Saturday GII Iroquois S.--Monday's GI Runhappy Hopeful S. looks solidly like a three-horse affair, as arguably the three most impressive dirt juveniles of the meet will clash in the seven-furlong test. Made the fractional favorite on the morning line at 7-5, J. Kirk and Judy Robison's Jackie's Warrior (Maclean's Music) looks formidable in his attempt for back-to-back Spa graded stakes scores. A first-out winner...

OLYMPIAD (c, 2, Speightstown--Tokyo Time {GSP, $249,177}, by Medaglia d'Oro), off as the 2-1 chalk to improve on a distant debut third to 'TDN Rising Star' Reinvestment Risk (Upstart) Aug. 1, broke running and raced prominently from third and three off the inside just off an opening quarter-mile in :22.80. Traveling sweetly on the turn, the $700,000 Keeneland September yearling came calling for the lead in upper stretch and finished nicely to graduate by a little more than two. The second most-expensive...

Upstart Colt Much the Best in Hot Spa Maiden; Garners Rising Stardom

The Saratoga opener Saturday was one of those vintage events in which virtually every firster was touted as a runner, and it was Klaravich Stables, Inc.'s Reinvestment Risk (Upstart) who emerged as the best of the bunch while becoming his freshman sire (by Flatter)'s third winner and first 'TDN Rising Star'. A $140,000 FTKJUL yearling turned $280,000 OBS March acquisition off a strong :20 4/5 breeze, the bay joined the Chad Brown barn at Payson Park this spring before stints at Monmouth and most recently locally. Off at 4-1, he...
