After running second to another 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' in Munnings Challenge (Munnings) his debut Apr. 11, second-time starter Doublecents (Goldencents) stepped up to earn the moniker himself Saturday on closing day at Oaklawn Park, absolutely steam-rolling a field of maidens to become his sire's third 'Rising Star'.
Unveiled going six furlongs where he had to sit off the pace and try to pull back that leader, Saturday's 3-5 favorite chose a different tactic, opting instead to hit the front himself and play 'catch me if you can' with an overmatched field.
Flown from the middle of the gate under Ramon Vazquez, Doublecents quickly opened up an advantage up the backstretch with P R the Holy Man (Giant Expectations) providing a small amount of pressure through the opening quarter in :22.32. Continuing to show the way past the quarter pole, he showed an eye-catching burst of acceleration down the stretch, romping home as Vazquez remained motionless in the irons to graduate by a cool 11 1/2 lengths.
“We thought he was a pretty good colt,” winning owner Danny Keene told the TDN after the win. “I was just anxious to see how good. I don't really know [where he might run next]. [Trainer Brett Creighton and I] gotta figure that out.”
Keene Thoroughbreds picked up Doublecents as 2-year-old for $120,000 at last year's Texas Thoroughbred Association 2-Year-Olds In Training Sale, a sale which Keene has had previous success with runners like GSW Frost Free (Frosted) and millionaire Texas Chrome (Grasshopper).
“I really liked his conformation,” Keene said of what appealed to him at that sale. “We've had some good luck at that sale, gotten some good [horses] there.”
The third 'TDN Rising Star' for Goldencents, Doublecents is out of a winning Uncle Mo half-sister to GISP State of Honor (To Honor and Serve). As a broodmare, she has a perfect four-for-four record of runners to winners with her last reported foal a now-yearling colt by freshman sire Drain the Clock.
