Ghaiyyath Half-Brother To German Derby Winner Sammarco Arrives

A Ghaiyyath (Ire) half-brother to 2022 G1 Deutsches Derby hero Sammarco (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) arrived on Tuesday. Said Gestut Park Wiedingen's Helmut von Finck on Twitter, "[A] very nice Ghaiyyath colt, [who is a] half-brother to Derby winner Sammarco, was born yesterday [Tuesday]." The duo are out of the two-time winner Saloon Sold (Ger) (Spectrum {Ire}), who placed third in the Listed Winterkonigin Trial. Her juvenile filly by Saxon Warrior (Jpn) made €11,000 at the BBAG October Mixed Sale, and her yearling colt, by Areion (Ger), has been named Shootout...

Stellar German Families in the Spotlight at BBAG

BADEN-BADEN, Germany--There has been much for German racing and breeding to celebrate since its premier yearling sale of 12 months ago. That same weekend, Torquator Tasso (Ger), a graduate of the 2018 sale, landed the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden just across the road from the auction house before going on to his memorable victory in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. A reminder, if one were needed, that German bloodlines can mix it with the very best in the world, as also exemplified recently by the GI Beverly...

Camelot's Sammarco Pounces For Munich Group 1 Triumph

The elders smothered last week's G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot, dominating once more in this week's G1 Sussex S. at Goodwood, but the Class of 2019 landed a telling counterpunch as Gestut Park Wiedingen's homebred G1 Deutsches Derby hero Sammarco (Ger) (Camelot {GB}--Saloon Sold {Ger} {SP-Ger}, by Soldier Hollow {GB}) annexed the latest elite-level clash of the generations, doing so with aplomb, in Sunday's 10-furlong G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis - Bayerisches Zuchtrennen at Munich. Sammarco, who saluted in his Oct. 31 debut at Halle, suffered his...

Seven Days: Veni, Vidi, Vici, Vadeni

This season we appear to have been gifted an above average crop of 3-year-olds, along with some truly exciting older horses who have remained in training. It is as it should be, but things don't always work out that way.  France and England exchanged Group 1 races at the weekend: on Saturday it was a case of veni, vidi, vici for Vadeni (Fr) (Churchill {Ire}), who gave France a first victory in the race since 1960, when it was won by the Percy Carter-trained Javelot (Fr) (Fast Fox {Fr}). The...

Camelot's Sammarco Prevails In Deutsches Derby Thriller

Hamburg's new starting stalls, wider than before, were the reason for a near 30-minute delay to Sunday's G1 IDEE 153rd Deutsches Derby and course technicians worked furiously on making necessary adjustments to the running rail so that they would fit the track. In the €650,000 contest itself, it was a matter of millimetres at the finish too as Gestut Park Wiedingen's G2 Union-Rennen victor Sammarco (Ire) (Camelot {GB) denied the Markus Klug-trained duo Schwarzer Peter (Ger) (Neatico {Ger}) and So Moonstruck (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) in a thrilling conclusion...

Camelot's Sammarco Prevails in G2 Union-Rennen Thriller

Gestut Park Wiedingen's homebred 3-year-old colt Sammarco (Ire) (Camelot {GB}--Saloon Sold {Ger}, by Soldier Hollow {GB}) outpointed subsequent sales-race winner Alaska Tiger (Ire) (Maxios {GB}) by a neck when annexing his Oct. 30 debut over 7 1/2 furlongs at Halle in his lone juvenile start and came back this term to finish second behind subsequent G2 Prix Hocquart third Lavello (Ire) (Zarak {Fr}) in Munich's May 1 G3 Bavarian Classic last time. The April-foaled bay enjoyed considerable support as the 14-5 second favourite for Monday's G2 Sparkasse KolnBonn - 187th...

Soldier Hollow: The 'German Galileo'

The German breeding industry was dealt a blow this week with the death of 17-year-old Adlerflug (Ger). In 2020, the Gestüt Schlenderhan stallion wrested the German sires' championship from another son of In The Wings (GB), Soldier Hollow (GB), who was runner-up and who had the highest number of winners overall. Soldier Hollow had previously been champion sire in 2016, 2018 and 2019. Adlerflug, whose grandam Alya (Ger) (Lombard {Ger}) was a sister to Allegretta (GB), the dam of Urban Sea (Miswaki), hails directly from the family of Galileo (Ire)...
