Historic Season At Colonial Wraps For New Steward Whitney Verbal

Colonial Downs may be wrapping up a historic 2023 season with Saturday's GIII New Kent Country Virginia Derby but several firsts paved the way this summer for brighter things to come in New Kent, VA. In addition to hosting its first Grade I races, the Arlington Million and the 'WAYI' Beverly D., Colonial welcomed a new face in the steward's stand. North Carolina native Whitney Verbal joined veterans Jack Houghton and Pat Bovenzi in making the calls Wednesday-Saturday and has been nothing but a welcome breath of fresh air in...

Pegasus Winner Goes For Virginia's First 'Million'

In the absence of Godolphin standout and GI Longines Breeders' Cup Turf winner Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), the role of morning-line favorite for Saturday's feature at Virginia's Colonial Downs fell to GI Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational winner Atone (Into Mischief). A Godolphin-bred gelded son of leading sire Into Mischief, the Michael Maker trainee, owned by Three Diamonds Farm, put a career best 103 Beyer Speed Figure to take down Brazilian standout Ivar (Brz) (Agnes Gold {Jpn}) at Gulfstream Park Jan. 28. He'll stretch out to 1 1/4 miles...

Rebel's Romance To Miss Arlington Million

Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who was to be rerouted to next Saturday's GI Arlington Million at Colonial Downs after going down in the July 30 GII Bowling Green S., will reportedly miss the race, a tweet from Godolphin read. The 5-year-old, whose previous trip to America resulted in a 2 1/2-length victory in last year's GI Breeders' Cup Turf, missed a prep for this year's G1 Longines Dubai Sheema Classic and was forced to train up to the 2410-meter feature, only to finish 11 lengths back of the world's...

Arlington Million Could Move to Colonial Downs

Churchill Downs Inc. has requested permission from the American Graded Stakes Committee to move the GI Arlington Million S., the GI Beverly D. S. and the GI Secretariat S. to Colonial Downs. The three races were fixtures at Arlington Park before that track closed in 2021. Last year, the Million and the Beverly D. were run at Churchill Downs. The 2023 races are slated to be run on Aug. 12. In November, it was announced that Churchill had acquired the assets of Peninsula Pacific Entertainment LLC, the owners of Colonial...

Tyler Gaffalione Talks Million Score, Saratoga Jockey Colony On 150th Writers' Room

Fresh off a win in the first edition of the Churchill Downs-hosted GI Arlington Million S., jockey Tyler Gaffalione joined the 150th episode of the TDN Writers' Room presented by Keeneland Tuesday. Calling in as the Green Group Guest of the Week, Gaffalione also talked about what the much-scrutinized Churchill turf course felt like, the pluses and minuses of riding in perhaps the greatest jockey colony ever at Saratoga, his most memorable victories, his chase for 2,000 career wins and more. "I love it personally, it's very challenging," Gaffalione said...

Santin Outstays Smooth Like Strait in Million

There was no Million Lane 5, no foreign contingent--Aidan O'Brien accounted for the only two overseas nominations--and only a fraction of the fans that would have passed through the turnstiles at the now-shuttered Arlington Park a handful of hours to the north. That Saturday's GI Arlington Million took place at all is something of a 'miracle', as Churchill Downs had not hosted a race on the turf since early June. The GII Secretariat S. and GIII Pucker Up S. for 3-year-old males and females, respectively, were canceled so as not...

Oasis or Mirage

In this instance, you really can't say that the grass is any greener on the other side of the fence. Take your dystopian pick: the floods of Kentucky, or the desiccation of Europe, where I've just returned from a vacation that seamlessly united the city parks of England and Italy in the same wasteland, with just a few bleached spikes still protruding from the baked, ashen earth.

This Side Up: Oasis or Mirage?

In this instance, you really can't say that the grass is any greener on the other side of the fence. Take your dystopian pick: the floods of Kentucky, or the desiccation of Europe, where I've just returned from a vacation that seamlessly united the city parks of England and Italy in the same wasteland, with just a few bleached spikes still protruding from the baked, ashen earth. However illusory, then, it's a relief to find enough recognizable vegetation salvaged Stateside at least to host all three of Saturday's Grade I...

With continued challenges facing Churchill Downs' newly installed turf course, which has included the cancelling of a number of grass events, the Louisville track has announced the hiatus of both the $300,000 GII Secretariat S. and the $200,000 GIII Pucker Up S. Both were scheduled for Arlington Million Day next Saturday, Aug. 13, which is to be held at Churchill for the first time after the closing of Chicago's Arlington Park last year. Churchill is moving forward with plans to host the GI Arlington Million and the GI Beverly D....

The Week in Review: Wayne Lukas Rolls the Dice

In an era where most every trainer has grown way too cautious and overly patient, 86-year-old Wayne Lukas has emerged as a breath of fresh air. Lukas announced last week that he was going to run his star filly Secret Oath (Arrogate) in the Apr. 2 GI Arkansas Derby against the colts instead of in the safer pick, the GIII Fantasy S. run the same day. It's not just a bold choice, it is a smart choice. With the contingent of males heading to the Arkansas Derby an unusually weak...
