Creating Magic at Atlas Farm

They say that every cloud has a silver lining. For SF Bloodstock's Tom Ryan, it was a very dark cloud. Last Friday, SF lost a foal at 30 days old. Then the next day, a young mare passed away after suffering from colic for the third time, leaving behind an orphaned foal. "Even when you know it's for all the right reasons, I promise you it's always a difficult call to euthanize any animal," Ryan said. "The ripple effect across a farm afterwards is immense, but without exception the show...

Charlatan The Real Deal

Freshly anointed 'TDN Rising Star' Charlatan (Speightstown) appears no worse for wear a day after his impressive 5 3/4-length victory in 1:08.85 at Santa Anita Saturday afternoon. "We knew he was a really fast horse," said Baffert Monday morning. Campaigned by SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables and Stonestreet Stables, the 3-year-old reeled off three consecutive bullet works at Santa Anita this winter, including an eye-catching five-furlong move in :59.60 Jan. 22. Speightstown Colt the Latest 'TDN Rising Star' for the Baffert Barn

Charlatan (Speightstown) would've likely gone favored in most Santa Anita maiden special weights if not for the presence Sunday of Lane Way (Into Mischief)--who was third behind Charlatan's 'TDN Rising Star' and GII San Vicente S.-winning stablemate Nadal (Blame) here last month--and he made 6-5 look like a particular bargain after zipping away in dominant fashion to get the 'Rising Star' nod himself. Seizing the lead without having to work particularly hard for it, the chestnut bowled along through splits of :21.89 and :44.72. He looked like a lock entering...

Uncle Mo Colt Puts It All Together; Becomes Second Rising Star of the Day at Gulfstream

Global Thoroughbred and Top Racing LLC's Caracaro (Uncle Mo) flashed signs of talent when a front-running, but green, second going seven furlongs at Gulfstream Dec. 8. He put it all together Saturday, however, stalking and pouncing his way to a six-length tally that earned him the day's second 'TDN Rising Star' nod. Bet down late and off as the 2-1 chalk, the $95,000 KEENOV weanling broke well and was reined in to press a longshot from out in the clear through a :23.70 opening split. He kept after that rival...
