War Front Filly 'Leaves' Them Behind in Riskaverse

War Front | Claiborne Farm

On Leave ran her record to three-for-three in 2016 and earned her first stakes victory with a convincing score in the Riskaverse S. The gray homebred finished second as the favorite in her debut over this course last Aug. 31 and was third sprinting on the Belmont lawn Oct. 10. Given the winter off, she returned with a two-length maiden breaker over grass at Big Sandy June 9 and repeated in an optional claimer there July 17. Bet down to 9-5 favoritism in this stakes debut, On Leave was away third-last and didn't take the first turn all that well, drifting wide and dropping back one spot further onto the backstretch. Well off a :23.12 quarter-mile, she advanced several spots into a :48.13 half, swung five wide at the top of the lane and exploded down the center of the course, sweeping to the lead at the furlong grounds and pulling away to triumph over She Doesn't Mind (Fr).

“She's a pretty impressive filly,” winning trainer Shug McGaughey said. “We gave her time after her third race last year. I said it was getting late in the year and let's give her the time she needs and bring her back [this year]. I always thought she had potential, and of course she came back and won. Her maiden race was kind of an easy race, but she beat a pretty good field in her 'A-other than' race, and she even improved off that today. If we can keep going in the right direction, we're going to have fun.”

Winning rider Jose Ortiz added: “She stumbled a little bit leaving the gate and then I had a lot of trouble the first turn. When we got to the three-eighths pole I asked her a little bit and I had a ton of horse. I was pretty confident. Then, when I made my move at the quarter pole, she exploded. It was a big performance. I told Shug I didn't think it was my best ride and she overcame that. She did it in good fractions so I think she's a serious horse.”

The winner comes from the extremely productive dam Meghan's Joy, who was purchased by Stuart S. Janney III for $450,000 out of the 2001 Keeneland November sale. Her second dam is a half to MGSW/GISP Yell (A.P. Indy), MGSW Roar (Forty Niner) and GISW Eastern Echo (Damascus), while her third dam, MGSW/GISP Wild Applause (Northern Dancer), is a half to MGISW Sea Hero (Polish Navy), MGISW Hero's Honor (Northern Dancer) and MGSW Glowing Honor (Seattle Slew).
