Tattersalls July Ends With 'Genuinely Vibrant' Feel

NEWMARKET, UK--Whatever problems British racing faces, a lack of demand at its bloodstock sales is not one of them. That in itself may only exacerbate the exodus of talent, particularly decent young handicappers, to far-flung nations with lucrative pots on offer, but if sales are your business, as is the case for Tattersalls, then this week can only be described as a highly successful one. From Friday's two sessions of the July Sale, however, the majority of the pricier lots will remain in training in Britain, merely switching from one...

Consistent Demand At Strong July Sale

NEWMARKET, UK——Trade continued apace at Tattersalls on Thursday, with a clearance rate of 90% upheld through two lively sessions of horses in training.  The international element of the sale was again evident in the morning session with two six-figure lots being purchased for Saudi Arabia and Australia respectively. Sheikh Abdullah Al-Malek Al Sabah is the new owner of Man Of The Night (Fr) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) (lot 381), who held the top spot throughout the day after he was knocked down at 175,000gns. The Saudi sheikh, who has more...

July Sale Roars Back To Business

NEWMARKET, UK--Comparisons from year to year can be tricky in an ever-changing sales programme but to put the first day of trade at Park Paddocks into some sort of context, an 11,000gns median bounced back almost to the pre-Covid level of 2019, with the average of 25,114gns surpassing that year's tally. Fears early in the pandemic that bloodstock sales would suffer have been largely unfounded. It is true that most have suffered from disruption over the last 15 months but not from lack of participation, as a 93% clearance rate...

July Sale Returns In Traditional Format

NEWMARKET, UK——With what could be the final sale in Britain to be held under Covid restrictions, Tattersalls launches its three-day July Sale in Newmarket on Wednesday, when fillies and broodmares form the core of the first all-day session. Trade on Thursday and Friday will be conducted in morning and evening sessions around racing on the nearby July Course. Last year's auction was reduced to two days, with an extra mixed sale introduced in August to allow for the fact that racing had only resumed from its enforced shutdown in early...

'Phenomenal' Clearance Rate Maintained At Tattersalls July

NEWMARKET, UK—One of the few sales not to have been ousted from its traditional slot in the turbulent wake of the global pandemic, the Tattersalls July Sale had a markedly different feel this year but it would be hard not to be encouraged at the level of trade across the last two days in Newmarket. As noted in Thursday's TDN, the clearance rate of 96% was the most extraordinary feature of the first session of the sale and that continued through to its conclusion on Friday afternoon at exactly the...

Demand High At Restructured July Sale

NEWMARKET, UK—Broodmares led the way through the first session of the mixed Tattersalls July Sale, an auction which is usually broken into morning and evening sessions to allow for the excellent racing on offer down the road at the July Course. This year, however, the reduced crowd drawn to Park Paddocks dodged showers and caught the racing action on screens around the sales grounds while the only show in town with a controlled audience continued apace within the ring. Direct comparisons to the regular July Sale are worthless. The traditional...

Guineas Sale Heads Tattersalls' July Action

NEWMARKET, UK—This week would normally be one of Newmarket's finest. Top-class racing, the Tattersalls July Sale, stallion parades and parties. As Britain reawakes from lockdown, the business end of the bloodstock world has managed to operate almost normally and racing has been back in action since early June behind closed doors, meaning that we have a July Week of sorts, albeit one without all the fun. The rearranged breeze-up sales have just two fixtures left, Wednesday's belated Guineas Sale at Tattersalls which leads straight into two days of a reduced...
