Letter to the Editor: Justin Casse on Mental Health Concerns in Racing

The broadmindedness of Kelsey Riley's piece on mental health during the age of COVID-19 and within the polarizing aspects of the Thoroughbred industry in Monday's TDN was refreshingly progressive. Both she and Mr. Hamelback spoke of realities that were too hard for many people to divulge in years past. As a 'field researcher' and advocate with significant knowledge on this topic, I was pleased to see the subject conveyed through an industry media platform. The bubble that is the Thoroughbred industry breeds a roller coaster of polarizing emotions that walk...

TDN New Stallions: Catholic Boy

In our ongoing series, New Stallions, the TDN is visiting first-year sires around the country and giving readers a chance to take a look at them on video. Today, we're at Claiborne Farm visiting Catholic Boy (More Than Ready-Song of Bernadette, by Bernardini), one of only three North American 3-year-old colts to win Grade I races on both turf and dirt. In accomplishing that feat, he joined Secretariat and California Chrome. Kelsey Riley spoke to Bernie Sams about the 5-year-old new stallion. TDN: Catholic Boy is pretty unique in that...

From Arizona To Ascot

Charles Briere's Fairway Consignment seems to have sailed a smooth upward trajectory since its establishment four years ago, hitting one target after the next. This June, a significant milestone was achieved when Fairway pinhook graduate Arizona (Ire) (No Nay Never) took Royal Ascot's G2 Coventry S. Fairway Partners purchased the dark bay for 65,000gns at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale and sold him to MV Magnier for €260,000 at last year's Arqana August sale. From the second crop of No Nay Never, Arizona is out of the placed English Channel...

The Weekly Wrap: Long Live The King

In the space of a fortnight, Shadai Stallion Station lost its two flagship stallions, Deep Impact (Jpn) on July 30, and King Kamehameha (Jpn) on Aug.10. The pair won back-to-back runnings of the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) in 2004 and 2005. A year older than Deep Impact at 18, King Kamehameha had been pensioned earlier this year and his legacy at stud was outlined by Kelsey Riley in Saturday's TDN. Losing two such heavyweights in the same year is doubtless a blow to Shadai but in Japan's stallion table for...

Fast Start For Keogh At The Curragh

Late last month Pat Keogh, chief executive officer at Leopardstown since 2011, took up the same position at The Curragh upon the resignation of Derek McGrath. The fast nature of that change over means that Keogh will slowly phase out of his Leopardstown role, presiding over both racecourses until the conclusion of Longines Irish Champions Weekend on Sept. 14 and 15. It is no secret that the redeveloped Curragh Racecourse, unveiled after three years of construction this spring, has undergone some growing pains which have already been addressed by racecourse...

Sales Debut for Darley Duo of Frosted, Nyquist

In 2017, Darley added two multiple Grade I winners to its stallion roster at Jonabell Farm: Nyquist (Uncle Mo), the first unbeaten 2-year-old champion to win the GI Kentucky Derby since Seattle Slew, and Frosted (Tapit), the fastest-ever winner of the GI Met Mile. Both will have their first foals go through the ring at this fall's breeding stock sales. TDN International Editor Kelsey Riley caught up with Darley's Darren Fox to talk about the two sires. KR: What are you seeing, and hearing from others, about the first foals...
