South Island Sale Holds Steady

New Zealand Bloodstock's South Island Yearling Sale on Friday saw 61 yearlings sold from 106 catalogued for a total of NZ$1,070,000, at an average of NZ$17,541 (+0.6%) and a median of NZ$13,000 (-13%). The clearance rate took a sizeable hit, down to 71% from 92% last year.

The sale was topped by an NZ$87,000 daughter of Rock 'n' Pop (Aus) who was consigned by Ravelston Stud and purchased by Richard Rutherford of Beltana Stud. Lot 100 is out of The Glitter (NZ) (Centaine {Aus}), a half-sister to champion filly The Jewel (NZ) (O'Reilly {NZ}) who has produced four winners from four to race.

“I really liked the pedigree of this filly, which I specifically purchased her for,” said Rutherford. “Ravelston don't sell too many from this iconic 'The' family, so it was a rare opportunity to secure a quality bloodline. She will be nominated for the Karaka Million Series and ultimately will join our broodmare band.”

Agent John Foote was the sale's leading buyer with four bought for NZ$16,500, including the first lot through the ring, a first-crop son of Jakkalberry (Ire) purchased in partnership with leading Victorian trainer Darren Weir for NZ$42,500.
