Earning TDN Rising Star status with an impressive debut win over 10 furlongs at Ascot May 8, French Dressing proved difficult in the preliminaries but showed all her class by opening her black-type account in emphatic style here. Only able to be jocked up in the stalls after refusing to allow Robert Havlin on board beforehand, the bay broke slowly and had two behind early exhibiting greenness. Eventually settled into a rhythm when switched to the rail at the end of the back straight, the homebred traveled smoothly behind Pamona once into the stretch and was sent past that rival and into the lead with a quarter mile remaining. Quickly asserting despite the chase of the very smart Crystal Zvezda, she had her rivals spread out across the Knavesmire by the time she hit the line in a fast time. “She's never shown that sort of temperament before–she can get on her toes at the end of the gallop–but on the lead-up here there is a lot to take in so you've got to forgive her for that,” her rider said. “It all worked out well in the end–she jumped a bit slow, but I was where I wanted to be anyway as at home she shows a really good turn of foot. With her antics beforehand, to go and do that as a filly that has heaps of improvement in her, she should go on to better things. She might stay further in time, but I think a mile and a quarter is probably around about the trip we want to be running at at the minute.”
