Romantic Vision Punches Distaff Ticket in Spinster

Romantic Vision | Coady

Romantic Vision, a G. Watts Humphrey Jr. homebred, landed herself a “Win and You're In” spot in the starting gate for the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff with a score in the GI Juddmonte Spinster S. Sunday at Keeneland. The 5-year-old tracked the pace and kicked clear to score by two lengths in the slop to earn her first success at the highest level.

“She ran great,” said winning conditioner Rusty Arnold. “I was surprised with how it played out. She was a little closer than I thought she would be, but she just seemed to relish this going.”

Away to a sharp beginning, Romantic Vision laid closer to the pace than usual, keeping a close eye on longshot Duchess of Duke in second behind fractions of :23.96 and :48.26. Gaining control with a decisive move on the far turn, she splashed into the stretch with a one-length advantage and dug in to hold safe Martini Glass, who drifted out a bit late, by two lengths.

“Her first step was the quickest one away from there, and she put us in a great spot,” said winning pilot Brian Hernandez, Jr. “She traveled really good for me the whole way. Going into the second turn, I was really confident in her. She's just really stepped up her last few races. She seems to be getting better and better.”

Romantic Vision steadily climbed the class ladder in recent years and proved she fit at this level with a runner-up effort in the GI La Troienne S. at Churchill May 5. A dull eighth in the June 17 GII Fleur de Lis H. and an equally unresponsive sixth in the Aug. 20 restricted Summer Colony S. at Saratoga, she regained her best form with a score in the GIII Locust Grove S. beneath the Twin Spires Sept. 16.

Pedigree Notes:

Romantic Vision's dam, SW & GSP Perfect for You, produced a pair of colts by Orb over the last two seasons before being bred back to Mineshaft this spring. Third dam Dream Scheme (Danzig) captured the GII Churchill Downs Distaff H. This is also the deep family of G. Watts Humphrey homebreds that yielded MGISW Clear Mandate (Deputy Mininster), herself the dam of MGSW & MGISP Newfoundland (Storm Cat) and GISW Strong Mandate (Tiznow), among others.
