Paid Up Subscriber Wins the Fleur de Lis

Paid Up Subscriber | Coady

Paid Up Subscriber put on a show for the Churchill faithful while making her two-turn debut in this 'Win and You're In' contest for the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff.

After registering back-to-back wins in 2015, she was fourth in the GII Prioress S. at Saratoga Sept. 6 and ninth in the GII Lexus Raven Run S. Oct. 17, her final start at three. She returned from a winter vacation to run third as the 2-1 favorite in a 6 1/2-furlong Keeneland allowance race Apr. 8. The chestnut broke through in her most recent appearance with a one-length score in a one-turn one-mile allowance race beneath the Twin Spires May 6.

Stalking the pace along the rail under a firm hold behind a half-mile in :47.82, Paid Up Subscriber commenced her rally on the turn, split horses and took charge in midstretch to win going away. Champion Untapable (Tapit) was very headstrong in the early stages and never mounted a serious challenge.

“She's supposed to do [two turns] on paper, but you never know until you try,” trainer Al Stall Jr. said. “We just didn't want to ship anywhere to try it, so we decided to stay home in a short field. Even though we knew that there were some tigers in here, the way she trained up to it really gave us a lot of confidence going in. I've had quite a few good horses, but she's trained as any mare I've ever had in my life.”

The two-time winning mare Shriek, a half sister to MGSW Stanley Park (Swain {Ire}), has a 2-year-old colt named Panic Button (Mineshaft); and a yearling filly by Scat Daddy. The Bruce and Laurie Berenson homebred, a $37,000 purchase by Chad Schumer while in foal to Scat Daddy at the 2014 KEENOV sale, was bred to Fed Biz last year.
