New Year's Day's Fighting Mad Makes the Grade in Torrey Pines

Fighting Mad | Horsephotos

Save a disappointing seventh to future GI Test S. winner Covfefe (Into Mischief) in the GIII Miss Preakness S. at Pimlico May 17, Fighting Mad has finished no worse than second in her four other trips to the post.

The bay began her career with a pair of tallies–a narrow debut victory at Del Mar last summer and a Churchill allowance victory in her comebacker Apr. 30. She followed her aforementioned disappointing effort at Old Hilltop with a game second to next-out GIII Rancho Bernardo S. third Lady Ninja (Majesticperfection) in a $62,500 optional tagger at Del Mar last time July 19.

Making her first start beyond six furlongs in this two-turn affair, the 2-1 favorite led comfortably through fractions of :23.29 and :46.98 and found another gear in the stretch to win for fun.

Pedigree Notes:

Fighting Mad is the third graded winner for New Year's Day, also the sire of this year's disqualified GI Kentucky Derby winner Maximum Security. Fighting Mad's two-time winning dam Smokey's Love was purchased by advisor Ben Glass on behalf of Gary and Mary West for $67,000 in foal to The Factor at the 2014 KEEJAN Sale. Smokey's Love is also represented by the Australian-bred Tapit colt of 2017, who brought A$110,000 from Dynamic Syndications/Dean Watt Bloodstock at the 2019 Magic Millions January Sale. High Fly (Atticus), winner of the GI Florida Derby, appears under Fighting Mad's third dam.
