Longshots Lead Asahi Hai Futurity

Deep Impact | Kelsey Riley

Satono Ares (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) led in a trio of longshots to fill out the trifecta of Hanshin's G1 Asahi Hai Futurity S., the country's championship-deciding race for the juvenile division, on Sunday. Breaking from gate 17 in the field of 18, Satono Ares dropped back to sit near the rear of the field with six behind and just off the fence. Tipping to the outside on the turn for running room, the dark bay began to circle horses coming off the bend and was full of run on the outside when the straightened for home. Gradually eating into the lead of the front-running Bom Servico (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}) under a drive, Satono Ares hit the lead inside the final 100 metres and held off late drives from Monde Can Know (Jpn) (Kinshasa No Kiseki {Jpn}) and the filly, 'TDN Rising Star' Mi Suerte (Jpn) (Frankel {GB}), who checked in fourth, by a half-length.

Satono Ares took three tries to get off the mark, finishing second in nine-furlong maidens at Sapporo Aug. 14 and 28, and at last found the winner's enclosure over the same distance at Nakayama Sept. 11. He then dropped back to a mile to win the same Tokyo allowance race used by Logotype (Jpn) (Lohengrin {Jpn}) (2012) and Danon Platina (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) (2014) as a successful springboard to victory in the Asahi Hai. Jockey Hirofumi Shii said after Sunday's win, “I rode him for the first time but was told by the trainer that he has a strong late charge. So I decided to race him toward the rear and he responded really well in the stretch. I think his strong point is indeed his turn of foot. I think he will definitely be able to aim for the big titles going forward.”

Pedigree Notes…

Satono Ares is the third foal out of Satono Amazones, whose third dam is the hugely successful producer Crimson Saint (Crimson Satan). She is best known as the dam of GI Breeders' Cup Mile and G1 July Cup winner Royal Academy (Nijinsky) and multiple Grade II winner Terlingua (Secretariat), better known as the dam of Storm Cat (Storm Bird). Terlingua's descendants also include G1 Racing Post Trophy winner Crowded House (GB) (Rainbow Quest) and almost countless other graded winners. The family has also been prolific Down Under, with G1 Sydney Cup second Older Than Time (Aus) (Don Eduardo {NZ}) also featuring on the page.
