Ky Downs Breaks Ground in Phase I of Expansion

Kentucky Downs officials broke ground at the facility Thursday, ushering in Phase 1, a $25-million expansion and renovation of the racing and gaming venue. Kentucky Downs, purchased by Ron Winchell and Marc Falcone last March, will be renovated in three phases, with the initial phase slated to almost double the area for historical horse racing gaming terminals to 1,200.

“Today was starting the process, we're going to make it bigger and better from top to bottom,” said Winchell, a horse owner and breeder in addition to being a Nevada gaming and entertainment entrepreneur. “When you come in here a year from now, it's not going to look like the Kentucky Downs you're used to the last couple of years. You'll have a couple of new restaurants. You'll have 18,000 to 20,000 feet of expanded building. That's going to be more up to date, a better and more comfortable feel. It's just going to be a better experience overall for guests, so when they walk in the door, they're going to have an elevated experience from what you have today from the aesthetics perspective.”

The first phase is scheduled for completion before live racing resumes Sept. 2, 2020.
