Wednesday's insights feature an in-depth rundown of the first juvenile race of Del Mar meet.

5th-DMR, $60K, Msw, 2yo, F, 5f, 7:03 p.m. ET
This opening day baby race features a number of promising fillies, including the buzzed-about JUST A SMIDGE (Into Mischief), who heads out for the Bob Baffert barn. Just a $39K KEENOV weanling RNA, she blossomed into a $425K Fasig-Tipton Midlantic juvenile after covering a quarter mile in a co-fastest :21 2/5. Tyfosha (Flatter), a $410K OBSMAR acquisition herself (:9 4/5), was heavily regarded heading into her Santa Anita unveiling June 9, but settled for second at 1-2. That effort looks much better considering the winner that day, Surrender Now (Morning Line), came back to romp in the Landaluce S. by eight lengths. Tyfosha is out of MSW/MGSP Penny Marie (Sky Classic), making her a half-sister to GSP Centrique (Malibu Moon). Agent Steve Young paid $385K on behalf of Ramona Bass to acquire Varanasi (Jimmy Creed) at last year's Keeneland September tlinesale. The most expensive horse to sell by her promising young sire last year, she is a daughter of MGSW Yearly Report (General Meeting), who was also responsible for Grade I-winning juvenile Condo Commando (Tiz Wonderful). Peter Miller, who conditions the aforementioned Surrender Now, has a pair entered here in Broome (Bellamy Road), an $80K OBSAPR buy (:10 1/5) out of stakes-winning juvenile Midst (Closing Argument); and My Princess Taylor (Distorted Humor), who cost $150K at OBSMAR (:10 2/5). The latter is out of a stakes-winning Tapit mare. Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer also saddles a pair of firsters. Mapit (Tapit) is a Don Alberto homebred from the family of Majestic Warrior and Dream Supreme. Our Slick Chick (Eskendereya), a $50,000 OBSAPR buy off an unblinkered :10 2/5 breeze, is out of a full-sister to Grade I-winning juvenile Wicked Style (Macho Uno). Fracas (Violence), third as the 11-10 favorite in her June 23 unveiling in Arcadia after setting a solid pace, has room to step forward. The $190,000 OBSAPR grad (:10 flat breeze) is out of a half-sister to speedy GSW Falling Sky (Lion Heart). —@BDiDonatoTDN
