Grade I Winner Illuminant Picks Up Where She Left Off

Illuminant, last seen annexing the GI Gamely S. going nine panels here last May, picked up right where she left off with a useful return as the even-money chalk. Hugging the rail while back off a dueling pace that produced a :42.94 half-mile clocking, the dark bay advanced willingly to sit behind the leaders turning for home before being guided out for clear sailing crossing over the dirt. Taking over under confident handling, she kept plugging along in the run to the wire to hold off last-out GIII Megahertz S. heroine Prize Exhibit. Miss Double d'Oro closed quickly for third.

Fourth in both the course-and-distance GII Monrovia S. and the GII La Canada S. on short rest going a dirt route, Illuminant enjoyed a confidence-building victory going a grassy mile here Mar. 10. She was third to superstar Tepin (Bernstein) in Keeneland's GI Jenny Wiley S. in April before ascending to the highest level in the Gamely. She had been entered in last month's GII Buena Vista S., but was scratched when that event was rained off the turf. Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners campaigned Illuminant last season before she was signed for by SF Bloodstock as a $900,000 Fasig-Tipton November grad last term. The winner's dam, a daughter of GSW Sunny Sparkler, has a 2-year-old filly named Elevated Vision (Great Notion) and was bred to Buffum last term.
