Galileo's Line of Duty Prevails in the Conde

By

One of the most blatant markers of the burying of old hostilities and the flourishing of a new cordial relationship between Coolmore and Godolphin, Line of Duty (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) became the first auction-purchased pattern-race winner by the sire for the boys in blue since the well-publicised thaw in Monday's G3 Prix de Conde at Chantilly. Runner-up to the subsequent G3 Tattersalls S. winner Arctic Sound (GB) (Poet's Voice {GB}) on debut over seven furlongs at Sandown July 6 and to the listed scorer Great Scot (GB) (Requinto {Ire}) over that trip at Haydock 15 days later, the chestnut had relished the step up to a mile when getting off the mark at Goodwood last time Sept. 4 and was even more at home over this extra furlong as he opened his black-type account. Settled in the slipstream of the leader throughout the early stages, the even-money favourite was trapped on the rail momentarily as Syrtis (GB) (Frankel {GB}) looked to have the edge in deep straight but William Buick was able to find enough room to squeeze through in the last 75 metres and score by 1 1/4 lengths.

Charlie Appleby's assistant Alex Merriam said, “He's a nice little colt who hasn't stopped improving. He was stuck a little behind, but when he got the gap he quickened nicely and looks a nice prospect. Charlie will decide along with Sheikh Mohammed whether or not he runs again this year.” Out of the desperately unlucky G1 1000 Guineas demotee Jacqueline Quest (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}), who was also third in the G1 Coronation S., Line of Duty is therefore a full-brother to the listed-placed Ballydoyle runner Hibiscus (Ire). The third dam Juno Madonna (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), a half-sister to the G3 King George S. winner Title Roll (Ire) (Tate Gallery), produced the G3 Mooresbridge S. and G3 Sandown Classic Trial S. scorer Regime (Ire) (Golan {Ire}) and the Listed National S. scorer and G2 Queen Mary S. and G2 Cherry Hinton S. runner-up Salut d'Amour (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). Godolphin's purchase looks to have been an inspired one, as Line of Duty's brother World War (Ire) cost the China Horse Club and David Redvers three times the amount but was ultimately disappointing and was sold on for just 32,000gns at last year's Tattersalls Autumn Sale. Jacqueline Quest's unraced 3-year-old colt also by Galileo, Hidden Dragon (Ire), is at Ballydoyle, while she also has a yearling filly by Dubawi (Ire) entered in next week's Tattersalls October Book 1 and another colt foal by Galileo in the offing.
