Dubawi Filly Takes the Royaumont

Successful over this trip at Compiegne Apr. 7 before finishing runner-up to TDN Rising Star Musawaah (Union Rags) in the Listed Prix de la Seine over 11 furlongs here a month later, Kitesurf took advantage as that rival backtracked to register a first black-type success. Settled in third early tracking Shadwell's hot favourite, the bay was asked to extend with a quarter mile remaining by Mickael Barzalona and took over with 300 metres to race as Musawaah began to tire. Staying on strongly from there, she was beyond recall as Bebe d'Amour staged a late effort. Godolphin's John Ferguson said, “She is the perfect combination of Andre Fabre's skills and Dubawi, as she keeps on improving. The trip was ideal, as was the ground. She has plenty of opportunities for her next race, including the [G2] Ribblesdale [S. at Royal Ascot June 22] or the [G2] Prix de Malleret [at Saint-Cloud July 2], but that is the trainer's decision.” Bebe d'Amour's trainer Jean-Yves Artu said of the runner-up, “She is a late-maturing filly who keeps improving with every run. She is more backward than her sister [the G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Amour a Papa (Fr)] and I am not yet sure what she is capable of. She may be an autumn filly, so I might wait for the [G3 Prix de] Minerve [at Deauville Aug. 13] and then have a September/October campaign.”

Kitesurf is the first foal out of the G3 Pinnacle S. winner Shimmering Surf, who was also runner-up in the G2 Lancashire Oaks and G2 Prix de Pomone. The second dam Sun On the Sea captured the Listed Swettenham Stud Fillies' S. and is a half to the Intent S. winner Beau Temps (GB) (Mtoto {GB}), who was also third in the GIII La Jolla H. and G3 Prix Saint-Roman. Her fourth dam is the G3 Prix Corrida scorer Radiance (Fr) (Blakeney {GB}), whose Listed Prix des Tourelles-winning daughter Blue Water shares Bering as a sire with Sun On the Sea. Blue Water is in turn the dam of the triple group-winning sire Indian Creek (GB) and the second dam of the G1 Irish Derby and GI Secretariat S. hero Treasure Beach (GB) (Galileo {Ire}). Next up from Shimmering Surf is an as-yet unnamed 2-year-old filly by Frankel (GB), while she also has a yearling colt by Kingman (GB) and a 2017 filly by Golden Horn (GB).
