Artie Schiller Gelding Swoops In Late to Be Latest Rising Star

Hawkish | Leslie Martin

Hawkish (Artie Schiller) became the second “TDN Rising Star” of 2018 with an ultra-impressive debut score at Gulfstream Saturday for trainer Jimmy Toner. A bit overlooked at 10-1, the gelding hopped at the start and saved ground near the back of the large field through opening fractions of :23.80 and :49.23. Swung out five-wide in search of running room turning for home, the bay unleashed a furious late turn of foot down the center of the lane, inhaling the field in a matter of strides to win by a half-length. Mufasa (Malibu Moon) and Funny Duck (Distorted Humor) dead-heated for second.

The winner is out of an unraced daughter of MGISW millionaire and turf distaffer Memories of Silver, who also produced fellow MGISW millionaire and top grass runner Winter Memories (El Prado {Ire}); and GSW La Cloche (Ghostzapper). Hawkish also hails from the family of MSW Bellavais (Tapit); SW and MGSP Elusive Collection (Elusive Quality); and stakes-winning “TDN Rising Star” Red Lodge (Midshipman).
