Archarcharch's Next Shares Pulls Off Double-Digit Upset in Shadwell Turf Mile

Next Shares | Coady

Placed twice at Grade I level in what has been a busy 5-year-old campaign, Next Shares (Archarcharch) parlayed a clean, ground-saving trip into a 23-1 upset of a deep group of turf milers in the GI Shadwell Turf Mile, a 'Win and You're In' event for the GI Breeders' Cup Mile at Churchill Downs Nov. 4.

Tyler Gaffalione, the Eclipse Award-winning apprentice jockey of 2015, is riding the entire fall meeting at Keeneland and was capping a remarkable seven-day stretch. The 24-year-old was tabbed by trainer Chad Summers to ride Mind Your Biscuits (Posse) in the GIII Lukas Classic Sept. 29 and made the most of that opportunity, then hopped a late-night flight to Los Angeles and guided Liam the Charmer (Smart Strike) to victory in the GII John Henry Turf Championship the next afternoon. The Shadwell marked the rising star's first stakes victory at Keeneland.

Drawn gate one in a field reduced to 13 by the gate scratching of Divisidero (Kitten's Joy), Next Shares fell out of the gate and took up a position in mid-field as the expected speed duel between Grade I winners Heart to Heart (English Channel) and Voodoo Song (City Zip) materialized through a sharp opening couple of furlongs in :23.37. Three back on the fence as the front-runners were in the process of dueling one another into submission, Next Shares continued to hug the fence on the turn while some of his rivals, including the prominently positioned favorite 'TDN Rising Star' Analyze It (Point of Entry) were revving up with wide runs. When the stalking Tourist Mile runner-up Great Wide Open (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) floated wide into the lane, Gaffalione took full advantage by sending Next Shares through and into an unassailable advantage. Qurbaan (Speightstown), 11th at the halfway point, rallied mildly for third, just ahead of a somewhat disappointing Analyze It. Heart to Heart and Voodoo Song weakened to finish ninth and 12th, respectively, while Tourist Mile winner Bound For Nowhere (The Factor) worked out a decent two-path trip from gate 13, but emptied out late to finish 11th.

“I had a lot of horse while I was getting there. I was just hoping it would stay open long enough,” the winning rider said, referring to the hole at the fence in upper stretch. “Credit to the trainer and the owners. They did a great job with him–I just had to hang on. I was a little closer [to the pace] than I thought I would be, but he was running so easily, I didn't want to take anything away from him.”

Placed in the GII With Anticipation S. at two for trainer William Cowans, Next Shares was a three-time winner in nine runs for trainer Bill Mott and was scooped up by these connections for $190,000 as a racing prospect at Keeneland November last fall. He was making his ninth start of the season in the Shadwell, having hit the board in the GI F. E. Kilroe Mile and Shoemaker Mile in California before breaking through with a 1 3/4-length success in the restricted Old Friends S. at Kentucky Downs Sept. 6.

Pedigree Notes:
A half-brother to the nine-time stakes winner Angelica Zapata, Next Shares is out of a daughter of Dot Dot Dash (Nureyev), a full-sister to perennial leading California stallion Unusual Heat, the dam of MSW Dash of Humor (Distorted Humor) and granddam of MSW & GSP Lil Bit O'Fun (Langfuhr). Two Dot Slew was blank for her next four covers, but produced a filly by Conveyance this past March.
