Prix d'Arenberg Goes To Frankel Filly

All eyes were on the Wesley Ward raider Wink (Midshipman) in Thursday's G3 Prix d'Arenberg at ParisLongchamp, but it was the Wertheimers' Kalahara (GB) (Frankel {GB}) who ended up on top at the end of the five-furlong test. Racing in rear early under Maxime Guyon as Stonestreet Stables' unbeaten Aug. 2 Colleen S. winner predictably made the running, the homebred was wound up to reel her in passing the furlong pole. Despite hanging down to her left, the 6-1 shot asserted for a length verdict over the visitor and 4-5 favourite, with the G3 Prix du Bois winner Livachope (Fr) (Goken {Fr}) adding substance to the form two lengths behind in third. Winning trainer Christophe Ferland was rewarded for his decision to drop back from six furlongs with the Aug. 2 Deauville maiden scorer. “After her win last time, I had said to everyone that she's run in the [G3] Prix Eclipse, but I had second thoughts and after talking to Maxime we had this idea–I worked her at home with speedy older horses and was doing it very nicely,” he explained. “I knew she had some talent, but now I'm convinced she has a lot.”

Kalahara, whose first two runs resulted in a second to the subsequent Listed Criterium du Bequet scorer and G2 Prix du Calvados runner-up Plainchant (Fr) (Gregorian {Ire}) at La Teste de Buch June 3 and a third placing behind the G3 Prix Six Perfections-placed Coeursamba (Fr) (The Wow Signal {Ire}) and the G3 Prix de Cabourg runner-up Jubilation (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) at Saint-Cloud June 30, is Frankel's first European black-type winner over this trip. The dam Desertiste (GB) (Green Desert) raced with little distinction over six furlongs, but as a daughter of the operation's outstanding Occupandiste (Ire) (Kaldoun {Fr}) always had potential as a producer of note and her third foal Sasparella (Fr) (Shamardal) captured the six-furlong G3 Prix Eclipse.

Occupandiste, who took the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest and G1 Prix de la Foret, has produced the GI Arlington Million and GI Woodbine Mile winner Mondialiste (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Impressionnante (GB) (Danehill), who won the G2 Prix de Sandringham and was second in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and G1 Prix d'Astarte, and Desertiste's full-sister Only Answer (GB) who also proved accomplished at sprinting when taking the G3 Prix de Saint-Georges and G3 Prix du Petit Couvert. Impressionnante produced Intello (Ger) (Galileo {Ire}), the hero of the G1 Prix du Jockey Club who was third in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and is proving a successful sire. This impeccable family of Fall Aspen (Pretense {GB}) continues to breed success and this operation's Shaman (Ire) (Shamardal) was the latest example when winning the G2 Prix d'Harcourt this term.
