'TDN Rising Star' Maymun Wins Pitched Optional Claimer Battle Over Stablemate At Santa Anita

6th-Santa Anita, $68,206, Alw (NW1$X), Opt. Clm ($100,000), 2-11, 3yo, 1m, 1:36.65, ft, neck. MAYMUN (c, 3, Frosted--Handwoven, by Indian Charlie) was a no-brainer 'TDN Rising Star' when streaking home to a 7 1/2-length graduation as a 1-2 mortal going 6 1/2 furlongs Jan. 20 and was trying two turns for the first time on Super Bowl Sunday. The 93 Beyer he received for that effort towered over his four rivals, and at 3-10, the Zedan runner won the break, but bore out badly into the first turn, bothering stablemate...

The Week In Review: It's Not Just The Derby; Now Baffert Has Top Oaks Candidate As Well

Saturday's GIII Las Virgenes S. at Santa Anita was a big test for the Bob Baffert-trained filly and 'TDN Rising Star' Kinza (Carpe Diem). She was coming off a scintillating maiden win in which she got a 96 Beyer, but was facing a much stronger challenge in the one-mile stakes. Not only did she have to prove she could go two turns, but she was facing another potential star in the undefeated Kopion (Omaha Beach), the winner of the GIII Santa Ynez S. On paper, this was a match race....

6th-SA, $100K, AOC, 3yo, 1m, 4:30 p.m. Richard Mandella has ambitiously spotted REVISED STATUTE (Consitition) for his debut Sunday. TDN Derby Top 12: Ace On Top, Rest of Deck Gets a Good Reshuffling

As if ranking the contenders for the GI Kentucky Derby isn't enough of a challenge in and of itself, the crystal ball-gazing becomes even more hazy when you factor in the ban imposed by Churchill Downs, Inc., on trainees from Bob Baffert's stable (click here for a more detailed writeup on this subject). Even though the official Derby qualifying points leaderboard omits those horses, TDN's Top 12 will continue to include them for the time being on the basis that 1) the situation could change; 2) the performances of those...

Zedan Joins List of Owners Sticking with Baffert Despite Derby Ban

Amr Zedan, who owns several top 3-year-old colts, has informed TDN that his horses are staying with trainer Bob Baffert, which means they will be ineligible to run in the GI Kentucky Derby, barring any change in policy from Churchill Downs. Churchill set Monday as a deadline for owners to take their horses away from Baffert. Any horse remaining in his barn after the deadline will not be permitted to race at Churchill Downs. "No move," Zedan said in a text message. "Mr. Baffert (is) our man." Tuesday morning,...

Maymun As Good As Advertised In 'Rising Star' Debut

Maymun (Frosted), a $50,000 KEESEP yearling pinhooked into a $900,000 OBS April 2-year-old by Paul Neatherlin, and racing for trainer Bob Baffert and Zedan Racing Stables, absolutely rolled on the front end Saturday in his 6 1/2-furlong debut to become the latest 'TDN Rising Star'. Maymun was an OBS April star, breezing in :9 3/5 and leaving no doubt in his now-trainer's mind of his ability. "He was ridiculously fast," Baffert said of the colt shortly after the sale. "He worked beautifully and came out of it well. That's half...

1st-SA, $65K, Msw, 3yo, 6 1/2f, 3:30 p.m. A pair of pricey Bob Baffert stablemates make their anticipated debuts Saturday to open the card at Santa Anita.
