Maxfield Headlines Mineshaft

Looking at the morning-line and past performances, the GIII Mineshaft S. looks like a one-horse race and that horse is the undefeated Maxfield (Street Sense), who towers over the rest of the field. A debut winner at Churchill in September 2019, the Godolphin homebred romped in the GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity S. a month later. The early favorite heading into that year's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile, he was forced to withdraw from contention just days before the race due to an ankle chip. Returning to action with a late-rallying score...

Tiz the Law Drills Five-Furlong Bullet in Penultimate Derby Breeze

Sackatoga Stable's Tiz the Law (Constitution), a looming prohibitive favorite in the GI Kentucky Derby, recorded his second-to-last breeze before the Sept. 5 Run for the Roses when covering five furlongs in a bullet :59.47 (1/39) over the Saratoga main track Sunday morning. The Barclay Tagg trainee was scheduled to breeze Saturday at the Spa, but had his work pushed back a day after a sudden downpour drastically changed the track conditions. Working under cover of darkness at 5:30 a.m. Sunday under exercise rider Heather Smullen, Tiz the Law clicked...

Art Collector Heads Churchill Workers

Bruce Lundsford's Art Collector (Bernardini), winner of the GII Toyota Blue Grass S. in his latest start, worked over a muddy Churchill Downs track Saturday morning. Trained by Tom Drury, the colt carved out fractions of :12.80 and :24.60 before galloping out five furlongs in 1:01.20 and six panels in 1:14.80. "It's so nice to have a horse who is versatile and can really run over any surface," said Drury. "He did everything very easily this morning and it was really just a perfect work. We are still taking things...

Full Field for Elongated Louisiana Derby

With the abrupt cancellation of racing indefinitely at Aqueduct and the announcement earlier this week that Keeneland has canceled its Spring Meeting, Saturday's GII Louisiana Derby offers one of the final few springtime opportunities at amassing points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, now tentatively scheduled to be contested on the first Saturday of September. The centerpiece of the meet in New Orleans, the Louisiana Derby will be run over a mile and three-sixteenths for the first time and is one of four races scheduled to be run over...

Anneau d'Or Headlines Split Risen Star

Deep enough to be split into two divisions with a combined 23 horses, Saturday's GII Risen Star S. at Fair Grounds is nevertheless short on household names. The exception is Peter Redekop's Anneau d'Or (Medaglia d'Oro), a close second in the GI TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile who will kick off his 3-year-old campaign as a favorite in the latter division of the annual stepping stone to the GII Louisiana Derby at the New Orleans oval. Selling for $480,000 as an OBS April 2-year-old, the bay debuted going a mile on...

Tapit's Enforceable Too Strong in Lecomte

Enforceable (Tapit) earned 10 points towards a start in the GI Kentucky Derby with a late-rallying victory in the GIII Lecomte S. at Fair Grounds Saturday. It was the second straight win in this event for trainer Mark Casse, who captured last year's renewal with eventual GI Preakness S. victor War of Will (War Front). Bet down to 6-1 from a 15-1 morning-line quote, Enforceable was away well from post 10, but was in no hurry, settling near the back of the pack as longshots Bango (Congrats) and ShaShashakemeup (Shackleford)...
