First Foal for MGSW & MGISP By My Standards

Spendthrift Farm's MGSW & MGISP By My Standards (Goldencents) has been represented by his first reported foal, a colt born Jan. 23 at Jacob Nance's IR Bloodstock in Midway, Kentucky. The newborn bay is the first foal out of the unraced mare Memento (Nyquist), whose third dam is GI Kentucky Oaks winner Blush With Pride (Blushing Groom {Fr}). This is the family of Broodmares of the Year Best in Show and Better Than Honour. The colt was bred by Chester Thomas's Allied Racing, who also campaigned By My Standards to...

Mr. Money Relocated to Louisiana

MGSW & GISP Mr. Money (Goldencents--Plenty O'Toole, by Tiznow) will relocate from Florida to Louisiana's Clear Creek Stud. Spendthrift Farm also is a partner in Mr. Money with owner Chester Thomas. "I just really like the way the Louisiana program is heading," said Thomas. "I think Mr. Money has everything it takes to be a successful sire, and I believe having him at a top farm in a growing regional market gives him the best chance to show what he can do. Most of my horses race in New Orleans...

MGSW By My Standards Retired to Spendthrift

Allied Racing's MGSW By My Standards (Goldencents--A Jealous Woman, by Muqtarib) has been retired from racing and will enter stud at Spendthrift Farm, standing the 2022 breeding season for a fee of $7,500 S&N. "By My Standards came up with a quarter crack that was going to force us to miss the rest of our goals before the breeding season, so the decision was made for him to retire," explained Chester Thomas, owner and manager of Allied Racing Stable. "It's a bittersweet day because this is a special horse who...

Right On the Money

A funny thing happened on Chester Thomas's way to downsizing his large racing stable and equine operation: The Hanson, Ky., entrepreneur became a first-time stallion owner, with five-time Grade III winner and Grade I-placed Mr. Money (Goldencents--Plenty O'Toole, by Tiznow) in his first year at stud at Journeyman Stud in Ocala, Fla. So while Thomas didn't buy any 2-year-olds as he has the previous two years, he did acquire 15 mares whose pedigrees worked well with Mr. Money. Had he not suddenly found himself in the stallion business, Thomas said...

Third-place GI Kentucky Derby finisher Mr. Big News (Giant's Causeway) geared up for Pimlico's Oct. 3 GI Preakness S. with a half-mile breeze in :48 4/5 (22/76) Friday at Churchill Downs. Regular exercise rider Tony Quinones was in irons. "He was very sharp this morning," said trainer Bret Calhoun. "I know it was cool. He went a little quicker than we wanted, but did it very easy, well within himself. He was full of energy, kind of what we wanted to see. It was what we wanted or better." Mr....

George Hall and SportBLX Thoroughbred Corp.'s Max Player (Honor Code) put in his final work ahead of Saturday's GI Kentucky Derby with an easy half-mile in :49.80 (26/50) Monday morning at Churchill Downs. The colt put up splits of :12.40 and :24.40 and galloped out in 1:02.80. "He's continuing to do well," Steve Asmussen, who has taken over training duties from Linda Rice, said. "I'm extremely excited about how he's going to run in the Kentucky Derby. I love how he looks going over the racetrack. His attitude is really...

Letter to the Editor: Chester Thomas

The past two years Allied Racing LLC has achieved our dreams of competing at horse racing's top level, headed by my first multiple graded-stakes winner and Kentucky Derby runner By My Standards and multiple graded winner Mr. Money. I'd hoped it was just the start of being in the top ranks of the sport we love dearly. But even as my wife and I ride this incredible wave, we plan to significantly downsize our stable. Why? Because of the movement to phase out the medication Lasix, a diuretic also used...
