Bill Oppenheim

A Kansas native who has worked in racing journalism since 1974, Bill Oppenheim is the co-founder of the newsletter Racing Update, and served as the paper's editor until 1993, when he moved to Scotland. November: First Three Days

As you'll see from the Weekly Sales Ticker, Fasig-Tipton's November Sale on Monday plus Keeneland Book 1 Tuesday and Wednesday, returned similar overall figures to last year, and in fact, the figures are very similar for each year back to 2013. This year, 341 horses were sold over the three days, for a gross just [...]

Bill Oppenheim: Kentucky November Covering Sires

Even a young sire as sensational as Coolmore Ashford's Uncle Mo, leading North American freshman sire and leading North American sire of 2-year-olds of 2015, is not immune to the second-crop blues. He had 155 2-year-olds of 2015, including 28 2-year-old winners, seven black-type 2-year-old winners, and two Grade I winners, including unbeaten 2015 2-year-old [...]

Bill Oppenheim: New For November–Weanlings

A total of 26 new sires, three of which stand at Coolmore in Ireland (Australia, War Command and No Nay Never) are represented by a total of 375 weanlings in the upcoming November sales, which is just under 20% of the 1,926 weanlings catalogued, according to statistics compiled by TDN's Heather Anderson for this column [...]

Yearling Market: 80% Snapshot

We're not completely done with the yearling market yet, but we mostly are. Arqana's four-day October Yearling Sale started Tuesday in Deauville, with Baden-Baden's BBAG October Sale, which is mixed but has a lot of yearlings, this Friday and Saturday, followed by Fasig-Tipton Kentucky's three-day October Yearling Sale next week, with 1,250 yearlings catalogued. But, [...]

Oppenheim: October 1: Who's The Sire?

Tattersalls' October 1 Yearling Sale: it really is the best yearling sale in the world. This week, 386 yearlings (70.2% of the 550 originally catalogued) grossed 88,038,000 guineas (£92,439,900, or about $117 million at today's rates), for an average of 228,078 gns (£239,482, or about $304k), with a median of 130,000gns (£136,500/$173,355). The number of [...]

Oppenheim: Book 1, Opening Day

In a three-day sale which is alphabetical by dam start to finish, as Keeneland September was, and this week's Tattersalls October 1 Yearling Sale is, in theory you should be able to multiply the first day's results by three to see how the sale should turn out by the end of play tomorrow. Yesterday's opening [...]

Oppenheim on Keeneland September

In his report on the Keeneland September Sale in yesterday's TDN (click here), Lucas Marquardt referred to the market as being both relatively stable, and polarized. Both things are true. I'm sure most people would agree that knowing what to expect from the Thoroughbred marketplace can't simply be a matter of referring to the previous [...]

Bill Oppenheim: A Tale of Three Books

Even as I write this, the sale continues with Book 4 Day 1, Tuesday. But last year, for example, over 80% of the complete sale's gross had been realized in the first three books. This year, 2,227 yearlings–almost exactly half the total number catalogued–were catalogued in the first three books, consisting of seven sessions over [...]

Bill Oppenheim: Book 1: Strong Finish

In our column of August 24 (click here), we postulated that if 60% of the 607 yearlings catalogued in Keeneland September Book 1 sold for an average of $300,000–approximately the Book 1 average in 2014-2015–our target for the Book 1 gross was $111-million. As there were 117 fewer yearlings (16%) catalogued in Book 1, we [...]

Bill Oppenheim: Young Sires To The Back

Beginning next Monday, the eyes of the Thoroughbred breeding and auction sales world focus on Keeneland for the best part of two weeks, although France's Osarus sale, in the southwest, is next week, and Tattersalls Ireland's Fairyhouse sale clashes the following week. But, with 4,479 yearlings catalogued over 13 days of selling, we forecast the [...]

Keeneland September Sires (All)

In spite of a little uptick at Doncaster's (now Goffs UK) two-day Premier sale last week, the yearling sales so far this year, in Europe as well as in North America, are struggling to hold their own, suggesting supply exceeds demand. There is plenty of evidence that it is strongest at the top and weakest [...]

Keeneland September Book 1 Preview

In 2014, Keeneland carded Book 1 over four days for the final time, cataloging 762 yearlings, 190+ a day. Last year, Book 1 shrunk to three days for the first time, when 724 yearlings were catalogued over the three days, 240+ a day. Book 1 is again three days this year (Monday, September 12 to [...]
