Quiet American Euthanized

Darley's Quiet American (Fappiano–Demure, by Dr. Fager), who was pensioned from stud duties at Darley's Jonabell Farm in 2013, was euthanized Friday at age 30.

“To achieve what he did as a racehorse and as a stallion, and then be able to live a long and happy life, is really what one hopes for of any horse,” Godolphin America COO Dan Pride said. “His legacy will certainly live on through his sons and daughters. He was such a favorite of ours as well as fans in general. We're all going to miss him.”

Bred in Florida by Tartan Farms Corp., Quiet American carried the colors of Sheikh Mohammed's operation throughout his racing career, which was highlighted by wins in the 1990 GI NYRA Mile H. and GIII San Diego H. and a second in the GI Woodward H. He retired in early 1991 with a record of 12-4-3-1 and earnings of $754,650.

Quiet American started his stallion career at Sheikh Maktoum's Gainsborough Farm and moved to Jonabell in 2007 when Darley consolidated their stallion operation. Responsible for 54 black-type winners and the earners of over $64 million, his top progeny include dual Classic winner Real Quiet, who came up a nose short of winning the 1998 Triple Crown; champion Hidden Lake; and Grade I winners Switch, Seattle Smooth and Cara Rafaela, who is the dam of Darley sire Bernardini.
