Monsun's Vadamos Gains Top-Level Honours in the Moulin

Runner-up in last month's G1 Prix Jacques le Marois, having annexed Maisons-Laffitte's July 17 G3 Prix Messidor, Vadamos at last attracted Group 1 fame with a dominant performance in Sunday's G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp at Chantilly. Frustrated by an early powder-puff tempo and seizing office on the home turn, the 12-5 third choice was stoked up passing the two pole and not for catching under a final-furlong drive to easily hold the running on Spectre (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) by 1 1/4 lengths for a belated first top-level score. “He was doing too much behind a slow pace and, as he's such a strong horse, that's why I decided to take over so soon after halfway,” explained winning rider Vincent Cheminaud. “I also decided to kick on early and he was just untouchable today.”

Vadamos arrived on the scene with a victory in Baden-Baden's G2 Oettingen-Rennen last year, but fluffed his lines when last of 13 in Ascot's G1 Champion S. next time and ran second to Solow (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) in a conditions heat atop this track's synthetic surface on seasonal return Mar. 3. Off the radar once more in Meydan's Mar. 26 G1 Dubai World Cup, he hit the heights in Saint-Cloud's May 1 G2 Prix du Muguet, but was left trailing in the wake of A Shin Hikari (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) when fourth in the May 24 G1 Prix d'Ispahan back here again. The homebred bay's versatility was in evidence as he bounced back to the top in Maisons-Laffitte's July 17 G3 Prix Messidor, and gave a glimpse of future spoils when narrowly denied by Ribchester (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) in the Aug. 14 G1 Prix Jacques le Marois in his first visit to Deauville last time.

“He's such a good-looking, genuine individual and really deserved to win at this level,” declared trainer Andre Fabre, claiming an outright record of six wins in the contest. “He now has two options for his next run; a Group 1 race in Australia or the [Oct. 15 G1] Queen Elizabeth II [S. at Ascot],” he added.

Markus Munch was as delighted as could be with a runner-up spot for Spectre, who had hit the board in the July 10 G1 Prix Jean Prat here before running fourth, behind Vadamos's second, in the Jacques le Marois at Deauville last time. “She is a lovely filly and shows improvement every time she runs,” he announced. “The softer the ground the better it is for her and she will tell us where we go next once we see how she comes out of this race. It's either the [Oct. 1 G1] Sun Chariot [S. at Newmarket] or the [Oct. 2 G1] Prix de la Foret [back here].”

Pedigree Notes…

Becoming the 21st individual Group 1 winner for Monsun (Ger), Vadamos is out of the stakes-winning Celebre Vadala (Fr) (Peintre Celebre), herself a half-sister to G1 Queen Anne S. and G1 Prix d'Ispahan victor Valixir (Ire) (Trempolino), and dual stakes placegetter Vadaza (Fr) (Zafonic), who in turn produced the G1 Prix Saint-Alary-winning pair Vazira (Fr) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) and Vadawina (Ire) (Unfuwain). The next dam, Vadlava (Bikala {Ire}), is a full-sister to the stakes-winning Vagrancy and half to the listed-winning Vadsa Honor (Fr) (Highest Honor {Fr}), herself the dam of G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains and G1 Prix Jacques le Marois hero Vahorimix (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}). Vadlava is the dam of four stakes winners headed by GI Breeders' Cup Mile winner Val Royal (Fr) (Royal Academy), from the family of G1 Prix de Diane heroine Valyra (GB) (Azamour {Ire}). Celebre Vadala has also bred the unraced 2-year-old colt Volfango (Ire) (Dutch Art {GB}), a yearling colt by Pour Moi (Ire) and a filly foal by New Approach (Ire).
