Turf Berth On The Line In Brazil

Haras Santa Maria de Araras's standout 3-year-old filly Daffy Girl (Brz) (Wild Event) is the main attraction among 15 horses entered for Sunday's G1 Grande Premio Brasil at Gavea, with the winner receiving an automatic berth into the G1 $3 million Longines Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita Park Nov. 5. The lone filly and Group 1 winner among 13 rivals after the early scratch of G1 Latinoamericano winner Some In Tieme (Brz) (Shirocco {Ger}), Daffy Girl will bid to become only the sixth female to capture the Grande Premio Brasil and first in 15 years since Queen Desejada (Brz) (Know Heights) conquered the country's marquee race in 2001. The daughter of Wild Event, who will now break from post 11 under Valdinei Gil, will attempt to provide owner-breeder Julio Bozano with his fifth win in the prestigious event. Runaway winner of the G1 Grande Premio Diana in both Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo and winner over the colts in the G1 Grande Premio Cruzeiro do Sul, the versatile filly enters the race off a wire-to-wire score in the G2 Grande Premio Doutor Frontin over Sunday's distance at Gavea on May 15. Her only two defeats in eight starts have come over a soft ground.

Daffy Girl's main opposition may come from Cabecinho (Brz) (Curlin). The 3-year old colt has won five of eight starts but has only raced once on turf, finishing second in the G1 Grande Premio Sao Paulo. The highly regarded son of Curlin could give trainer Venancio Nahid his fifth success in the Grande Premio Brasil.
