Sent postward as the 17-10 favourite for Sunday's G1 Darley Prix Morny at Deauville, Stonestreet Stables' Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) added lustre to a banner season for Tally-Ho Stud with a dominant performance in her first outing beyond the five-furlong trip. She had opened up with an impressive 3 1/2-length score over five in her May 31 unveiling at Gulfstream Park, stepping up to garner Royal Ascot's June 20 G2 Queen Mary dash on black-type bow in her only other start, and the April-foaled bay went straight to the head of affairs in this straight six-furlong test. Campanelle was comfortable in front for the most part, but a battle looked in store when rivals stacked up in behind as she came under pressure approaching the final furlong. However, any concerns about stretching out to six on softened ground were quickly dismissed as she found more than enough under Frankie Dettori's urgings inside the final furlong to comfortably hold the vain bids of G2 Coventry S. victor Nando Parrado (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) and Rhythm Master (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) by two lengths and a neck, respectively, and remain undefeated.
“The ground is bad, but she has a lot of class and overcame that,” said Dettori. “She is much better on good ground and she is the best we had seen at Royal Ascot. She travelled nicely, pricked her ears and was relaxed throughout the race. She did it well today and there are great things to come from this filly.”
“She's a big filly, but with a lot of speed as well and we saw that right from the start when we started training her down in Florida,” said trainer Wesley Ward after securing a third renewal of the contest. “What really impressed me was that she went to [Royal] Ascot off a very short rest before she won the Queen Mary. My horses usually get a chance to acclimatise to the cooler weather over there and have good spacing between their races. Everything came close together for her and she still won. Now that she's had the time, I've really started to see her blossom at home. We had good spacing from Ascot to the Morny and she's grown as well as really thriving on the travel. She goes from A to B and when she gets to B she just picks right up. We're very lucky to have a filly like her, with that long stride she has, and she's a lot bigger horse than [previous Morny winners] No Nay Never or Lady Aurelia, who were real sprinting types.”
Christophe Soumillon, rider of runner-up Nando Parrado (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), was never at ease with his mount and explained, “He never travelled comfortably and was shying away from the [stands' side] rail and hanging right the most of the race. I never had him straightened out in front of me, which is sad because if he had done so I feel we would have won.”
Campanelle is the latest of six foals and one of four scorers out of Listed Marygate S. winner Janina (GB) (Namid {GB}), herself the leading performer bred from G3 World Trophy victress Lady Dominatrix (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). Tally-Ho purchased Janina, in foal to Exceed and Excel (Aus), for 39,000gns at the 2016 Tattersalls July sale. Descendants of Lady Dominatrix's third dam Lowna (GB) (Princely Gift {GB}), who annexed the pre-pattern Molecomb S., include G2 Lowther S. victress Miss Demure (Ire) (Shy Groom) and stakes-winning G1 Cheveley Park S. third Royal Shyness (GB) (Royal Academy).
