Hiyaam (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}) got off the mark at second asking in the spring and immediately stamped herself as a filly of quality, rattling off placings in the G2 Manifold S. and G3 Ethereal S. in high quality company, and she was fourth in the G2 Wakeful S. before wrapping up her campaign with a third in the G1 VRC Oaks. Warming up for this with a third in the G2 Phar Lap S. over an inadequate 1500 metres on Mar. 17, Hiyaam will now get a second shot at an Oaks win in the Australian version on Apr. 14 at The Championships. Breaking on top and leading by just over two lengths throughout, Hiyaam was put to a drive by Michael Dee at the top of the lane and extended her advantage as favoured Unforgotten (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) came roaring from the back, with last season's G1 Thousand Guineas winner Aloisia (NZ) (Azamour {Ire}) following her a little more tamely. Hiyaam was never truly in danger of being overhauled, however, and hit the wire 1 3/4 lengths the best.
“Credit to the filly,” Dee told Racing NSW. “Last prep I was riding her a bit too pretty. Today there was no speed in the race so from the one pole we just elected to roll forward and dictate terms. She was way too good in the end.”
“This is right up there, it's my third Group 1 now but that's my favourite one winning for my old boss and master Mick Price. He's given me a lot of support since I came over here so big thanks to him.”
Of his trip, he added, “No worries at all. Even after the line. I was still humming down the side. Bring on the Oaks, that is for sure. If she can get the lead and run in the Oaks she will be hard to beat that is for sure.”

Hiyaam is just another example of the great loss that her sire, High Chaparral, is to the Australasian breeding ranks. High Chaparral's 10-time Group 1-winning son, So You Think, is shaping up as a very important sire Down Under, while another son, the seven-time Group 1 winner Dundeel (NZ), sired his first stakes winner from his first crop on Saturday when Irukandji (Aus) took the G3 Schweppervescence S. for Spendthrift Farm and Team Hawkes earlier on the Rosehill card. Hiyaam is the 21st Group 1 winner for High Chaparral, and she represents the same cross as Dundeel and Fenway (Aus), who also won this race. While she is the first stakes winner produced by her dam Mazarine (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}), that mare is the second dam of the New Zealand Group 3 winner Exquisite Jewel (NZ) (Lucky Unicorn) and the stakes-placed Nordic Duke (NZ) (Viking Ruler). Mazarine has an as-yet unraced 2-year-old filly, Faayza (NZ) (O'Reilly {NZ}), and she produced a filly by Rip Van Winkle (Ire) last year.
