Letter to the Editor: An American in Newmarket

I recently spent four days in Newmarket England at Phantom House Yard of William Jarvis. Accompanied by Gray Lyster and Joe Miller, I had the great honor of drinking wine and cognac with an English Derby winning trainer and his gracious wife. Breakfast, coffee, Percy the black lab, cigarettes, warm showers, freezing cold bed sheets, and lively conversation were part of the daily routine at Phantom House Yard.

A morning of training with Mr. Jarvis, which Grey and I enjoyed, was the highlight of my trip. I thoroughly enjoyed everyone at Tattersalls Sales–Jimmy George and Harvey Bell in particular were so welcoming. Dinner at The Jockey Club will forever be burned in my memory.

But I now have a deep desire to be back next year at Phantom House to enjoy the horse sale and to someday race a great horse with William. I hope to make this dream a reality soon… I'll be back to Newmarket in my thoughts and day dreams often. Cheers!
