Cool Catomine made his first start against winners count with a rallying victory in the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, the Prince of Wales S., Tuesday evening at Fort Erie.

The bay graduated from the maiden ranks at fourth asking on the Queen's Plate undercard July 2 and prepared for this with a pair of works over Woodbine's dirt training track July 15 and

July 21. Tracking the pace carved out by GI Kentucky Derby pacesetter State of Honor through splits of :23.52 and :47.99, the longshot appeared to be retreating midway on the far turn as the frontrunner kicked on, but re-rallied into contention at the top of the lane. Those two threw down until just inside the eighth pole, when Cool Catomine started to do the better work, and he kicked away from there under Luis Contreras to pull the upset. Aurora's Way, the narrow race favorite making just his third start, nailed State of Honor in the closing strides for second money.

“I love it when a plan comes together,” said winning trainer John Ross. “We had some delays early on in his 3-year-old career, we had to add blinkers and find out some things about him. I have to credit Luis Contreras, who said 'John, this horse could need blinkers. You could see the horse coming forward in all his races. We're counting our blessings today and cherishing the moment. We're just so overwhelmed.”

Winning pilot Contreras added, “I'm so glad this horse found me and brought me here. Last time, I learned you had to ride this horse all the way. He'll give you everything he has if you keep riding him.” Click for Equibase.com chart.

Pedigree Notes:

The winner is a half to Wild Catomine, winner of Woodbine's Fury S. and second in the 2014 Woodbine Oaks. His third dam, Martessa, was champion 3-year-old filly and champion miler in Germany in 1991. Smart Catomine, winless in two career starts, is responsible for a juvenile Data Link filly named Aeriodite who sold for $60,000 to Lou Tucci as a Fasig-Tpton Summeryearling, a yearling filly by Flashback and a Goldencents filly foaled May 17.
