While there was drama at Randwick on Saturday, a further tragedy occurred at the provincial New South Wales track of Warialda where jockey Darren Jones lost his life in a race fall.
The 48-year-old from Tamworth was aboard favourite Montague Clan (Aus), who was involved in a three-horse incident in the third race of the meeting. The two other jockeys involved, Leanne Henry and Melanie Bolwell, both suffered minor injuries.
“This is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts and prayers go out to Darren's family and friends,” said Racing NSW Chief Executive Peter V'landys.
