'Yankee' to Star on Australia's Big Day

Yankee Rose | Racing and Sports

As Single Gaze (Aus) (Not A Single Doubt {Aus}) proved in last weekend's Vinery Stud S., being small is no barrier to success, and trainer David Vandyke can approach Saturday's Inglis Sires' Produce S. full of hope that his filly Yankee Rose (Aus) (All American {Aus}) can go one better than her impressive close-up second in the G1 Golden Slipper a fortnight ago.

Speaking to racing.com, the trainer recalled how he felt intimidated by some of the runners in the Slipper field who towered over his daughter of All American, but Yankee Rose appeared not to share his apprehension as she tore down the middle of the track and came close to nailing Capitalist (Aus) (Written Tycoon {Aus}) on the line.

One of five fillies in the 12-strong line-up, Yankee Rose will face stiff opposition from the Godolphin colt Teleprion (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}), who was fourth home in the Slipper after being hindered in running. He will have a different James in the saddle on Saturday, with Godolphin's British jockey James Doyle being replaced by New Zealander James McDonald.

Good Standing (Aus) (Artie Schiller) had Teleprion at his mercy when winning Randwick's G2 Pro-Ride Skyline S. on Feb 27, but could manage only a 10th-place Slipper finish. He should, however, be more than capable of coping with the step up to 1400 metres.

Omei Sword (Aus), a A$675,000 daughter of High Chaparral (Ire), has raced just twice, but impressed many after being beaten a head by Calliope (Aus) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) in the six-furlong G2 Magic Night S. at Rosehill on Mar. 12. She will surely improve for the extra distance.

Another filly in with a chance is Matthew Smith's Faraway Town (Aus) (London Calling {Aus}), who wasn't beaten far when fifth behind Omei Sword in the Magic Night.

In three starts in Victoria, Seaburge (Aus) (Sebring {Aus}) has done little wrong for the training team of David Hayes and Tom Dabernig and is already a winner over this distance when landing the G2 MSS Security Sires' Produce S. at Flemington Mar. 12.

Three-quarters of a length behind him in second that day was Detective (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}), who re-opposes and is one of two runners, along with last-time-out Rosehill winner Attention (Aus) (Stratum {Aus}), for the father-and-son team of Peter and Paul Snowden.
