Vet Found Guilty In Cobalt Case

Midsummer Sun | Racing and Sports

Veterinarian Adam Matthews has been found guilty of all six charges against him in the cobalt case surrounding the Sam Kavanagh-trained Midsummer Sun (GB) (Monsun {Ger}), according to Racing.com. Matthews was charged for supplying two bottles of a vitamin complex containing high concentrations of cobalt to Dr. Tom Brennan, who in turn supplied them to Kavanagh. The penalty hearing has been set for Nov. 26. Kavanagh was banned for nine years and three months, while Brennan was banned six years.

Meanwhile, Mark Kavanagh, the father of trainer Sam Kavanagh and based in Victoria, and fellow trainer Danny O'Brien are set to receive their prize money from the spring carnival that was frozen by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board pending their hearings, according to Racing.com. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal deemed that if Kavanagh and O'Brien have been allowed to continue participating in racing, they should get the benefits. The hearings for Kavanagh and O'Brien begin Nov. 30 and the hearing from trainer Peter Moody will begin next month.
