UAE Trainers Banned For Cobalt Use

Vivernus | Dubai Racing Club/Andrew Watkins

The Emirates Racing Authority have handed out one-year bans to two trainers whose horses tested positive for more than the permitted level of cobalt in post-race samples. Following samples taken from Vivernus (Street Cry {Ire}) after his win in a maiden at Meydan Jan. 14, the presence of cobalt above the set limit of 100mg of cobalt per litre of urine sees trainer Musabbeh Al Mheiri suspended for 12 months and the horse stripped of his win. Al Mheiri pleaded guilty to the charge, which the ERA said was considered when handing out his sentence. Another trainer, Hassan Al Hammadi was found guilty of a similar offence and received the same penalty after his horse Salmeen (Majd Al Arab {GB}) finished second in an Arab race at Al Ain last November.
