Texas Red to Crestwood Farm

Texas Red (Afleet Alex–Ramatuelle {Chi}, by Jeune Homme), winner of the 2014 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile, will begin his stud career next month at Pope McLean's Crestwood Farm, the farm announced Sunday. He will stand the 2017 season for $7,500 LFSN.

“Texas Red has been a superstar since the moment he walked into the barn,” trainer and co-owner Keith Desormeaux said. “It was nice to see those expectations come to fruition. He took my career to new heights and I will always be grateful.”

Texas Red was third behind American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) in the GI FrontRunner S. before powering to a 6 1/2-length triumph in the Breeders' Cup. He opened his sophomore campaign with runner-up finishes in the GII San Vicente S. and GIII Dwyer S. before being knocked off the Triple Crown trail by an abscess. The bay returned to take the 2015 GII Jim Dandy S. On the board in seven of nine starts, he retired with three wins and earnings of $1,767,300.

Desormeaux, Erich Brehm, Wayne Detmar, Gene Voss and Lee Michaels will retain a majority interest in Texas Red and will stand him in partnership with Crestwood Farm.

“Our ownership group sees Pope McLean and Crestwood Farm as the perfect partner to drive the success of Texas Red's stallion career,” said Brehm. “His win in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile gave us all the thrill of a lifetime. We are committed to seeing him succeed in his next career. Between the partners we are looking to purchase a number of quality broodmares over the next few months in order to breed to Texas Red. We will aggressively buy and sell Texas Red babies and will be sending many of them to Keith for training.”
