Term of Art Takes Rained-Off DeMille

Calumet Farm colorbearer Term of Art (Tiznow), one of two runners in Sunday's Cecil B. DeMille S. to have never tried turf, took advantage of rare wet weather at Del Mar to annex the rained-off affair for a first stakes success.

Given a 7-1 chance off a well-beaten ninth at 90-1 in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita Nov. 5, the bay drafted from the two path in second-last early as favored Sword Fighter (Wildcat Heir) showed the way. Term of Art caught the eye as he mounted a wide bid turning for home, but the Peter Miller-trained duo of Sword Fighter and Vending Machine (Hard Spun)–the other entrant to have never tried turf–still had run up front. Term of Art continued on under energetic reminders from pilot Joe Talamo, and found his best stride in the late stages to kick away by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:41.69. Vending Machine and Sword Fighter rounded out the exacta and trifecta, respectively.

“He's growing up,” said new father Talamo. “The more this horse runs, the better he's going to get. He'll just improve as he goes along, as he matures. I was very impressed with him today. I think he'll run on, too. He'll run a mile and a quarter. He wasn't blowing hard at all at the end of this today. The track is playing OK. It's mostly fair. Maybe a little deep; I don't think they're going to be setting any track records today.”

Third behind subsequent GI Del Mar Futurity third Midnight Pleasure (Midnight Lute) sprinting here July 24, Term of Art went one better as the favorite over track and trip Aug. 25. He graduated by a nose going the same distance at Santa Anita Oct. 8, but never made an impact in the Breeders' Cup there after getting roughed up early.

“The Breeders' Cup Juvenile was a lot of horses and it got a little tight coming out of the gate,” said Leandro Mora, assistant to trainer Doug O'Neill. “He's not a horse who can take dirt in his face. He's got to be a little clear. But he came out of it sound and we decided to try him in this race on the grass. When the race was called off the grass, Doug called me and said 'What do you think?' I said I like it because it's off the grass. It worked out well and he wasn't even tired when he came back. We still have a lot more we can do with this horse.”

Pedigree Notes:

Unraced Miles of Style, a full-sister to GISW Mr. Sidney, sold for $575,000 at the 2011 Keeneland November sale in foal to Quality Road. She produced a Kitten's Joy colt in 2015, and was bed back to Empire Maker this past spring after being barren the previous year. Term of Aet's second dam is MGSIW Tomisue's Delight, a full-sister to Horse of the Year Mineshaft out of MGISW Prospectors Delite.
