Tapit's Dream Pauline Hangs On in Sugar Swirl

Dream Pauline | Lauren King

Stonestreet Stables's regally bred 'TDN Rising Star' Dream Pauline (Tapit–Dream Rush) continued her promising ascent up the class ladder Saturday with a first graded success in the GIII Sugar Swirl S. at Gulfstream. Moving in to second down the backside behind an opening quarter of :22.73, the 7-5 chalk took over past a half in :46.26. She opened up some into the straight, but grew a bit leg weary late, only to be saved by the wire from Stormy Embrace (Circular Quay)'s advances.

A six-length debut romper at Aqueduct last December, Dream Pauline resurfaced in August at Saratoga to annex a Saratoga allowance. She was pre-entered in the GI Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint, but after failing to make it into the field, instead contested Churchill's Nov. 4 Dream Supreme S. in which she finished third after a troubled journey.

“I like the way she did it today,” said rider Javier Castellano. “You don't know when it rains like this and how they'll respond to the track, but she did it really well today. She broke sharp out of the gate and put me in a good spot all the way in the race. I was able to control the race and I liked the way she finished. She looked around a little bit in the last sixteenth, but she was engaged when she saw the other horses outside and I think it was a great performance today.”

Dream Pauline had been entered in last Saturday's Garland of Roses S. at Aqueduct, but was scratched in favor of this spot.

“She drew the one-hole there and it just wasn't an ideal situation, so everybody decided to just come here and it worked out great,” explained trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. “We don't even train much on a track like this, so we didn't know how she would handle it, but she went well.”

He added, “It's such an important win for this filly with her pedigree and the connections, to win for Barbara [Banke] and Stonestreet, so it was a huge win.”

McLaughlin said that Dream Pauline would likely be pointed to the Jan. 26 GIII Hurricane Bertie S. on the Pegasus World Cup undercard.

Pedigree Notes:

Dream Pauline is the 112th stakes winner and 68th graded winner for super sire Tapit. Her two-time Grade I-winning dam has now produced three runners who have excelled in stakes company in Hallandale Beach. GISW Dreaming of Julia earned a gaudy 114 Beyer Speed Figure for her 21 3/4-length drubbing in the 2013 GII Gulfstream Park Oaks, while young sire Atreides was four-for-four over the strip. The stakes-placed McLaughlin trainee Perchance (Distorted Humor) was an optional claiming winner here in 2015 as well. Dream Rush's unraced 2-year-old filly by Curlin was an $875,000 KEESEP RNA. She produced a Medaglia d'Oro colt Feb. 21.
