Tapit Colt Aces Class Test in Hutcheson

Madison's Luna | Lauren King

A debut winner at Tampa Bay Feb. 10, Madison's Luna took his record to two-for-two with a dominant win in the Hutcheson. The 4-1 shot broke inward, brushing with his neighbor, but was quickly straightened out by jockey Julien Leparoux and was hot on the heels of pacesetters 2 and 4 through a sharp first quarter in :22.42. Drawing alongside those rivals on the backstretch run, the $400,000 KEESEP buy took control entering the bend, while drifting out a bit, and stormed clear in the lane to win for fun.

“It was ambitious but we thought it was worth a try,” said winning conditioner Phil Bauer, who named the GIII Pat Day Mile May 5 at Churchill Downs as Madison's Luna's next start. “I'm very pleased, maybe a little surprised how he did it. He left me a little surprised in his maiden win at Tampa too. He cruised up to the pretty honest pace. You're always excited when they get to the quarter pole in that manner. We were excited when Julien turned him loose and put a few (lengths) on them and maintained it.”

Pedigree Notes:

Breeder Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings purchased Madison's Luna's dam, the SP Scarlet Tango, for $850,000 carrying a full-sibling to 2008 GI King's Bishop winner Visionaire (Grand Slam) at that year's Keeneland November sale. During her tenure at Stonestreet, she produced Grade I-winning 'TDN Rising Star' Tara's Tango (Unbridled's Song), who had her first foal, a colt by Medaglia d'Oro, Jan. 18; and GSW and GISP Scarlet Strike (Smart Strike), who summoned $1.3 million from Al Shaqab at the 2014 Keeneland November sale. The now-20-year-old mare is also responsible for a 2-year-old colt by Speightstown and a Curlin colt born Jan. 28 of this year. Madison's Luna is bred on the same Tapit/Unbridled's Song cross that produced champion and 'TDN Rising Star' Unique Bella.
