Street Sense's Avery Island Runs to the Money in Withers

Avery Island | Sarah Andrew

Avery Island (Street Sense), a decisive winner of Aqueduct's GII Nashua S. and runner-up behind Catholic Boy (More Than Ready) as the 2-1 favorite in the GII Remsen S. last time Dec. 2, took care of business as the chalk in this scratched-down affair.

The Godolphin homebred tracked from second as 34-1 shot Coltandmississippi (Pioneerof the Nile) sped off through fractions of :23.32 and :47.08. The dark bay drew alongside the pacesetter on the far turn, took command as they straightened for home and kept finding more in the stretch. Firenze Fire, winner of last fall's GI Champagne S., outgamed the well-bred 'TDN Rising Star' Marconi for second.

“It was a great run,” winning trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said. “Joe Bravo rode him very well, letting the other speed go and sitting second. He did everything right and finished strong. It was a nice win and we're pleased with Avery Island. We're not sure what we're going to do for the next race. I'll talk to Jimmy Bell with Godolphin and figure it out, but we're not looking at the Gotham because it goes back to a mile.”

A well-beaten debut seventh as the 3-1 favorite sprinting at Saratoga Aug. 19, Avery Island graduated by 5 1/4 lengths at second asking when stretched to 1 1/16 miles at Belmont Sept. 30.

Pedigree Notes:

Avery Island's dam, Darley homebred Kinda Spicy, was a perfect two-for-two in her career, headed by a nine-furlong allowance win over subsequent two-time graded winner and GI Breeders' Cup Distaff third Authenticity (Quiet American) at Saratoga in 2011. Avery Island's second dam Isola Piu Bella (Chi) (Rich Man's Gold) was Chile's Horse of the Year in 2004 and was imported to the United States by Sumaya U.S. Stable. Kinda Spicy produced a colt by Street Sense in 2016 and a colt by Ghostzapper in 2017 before visiting Nyquist last spring.
