Champion Stellar Wind (Curlin), who topped last year's Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale when selling for $6 million to Coolmore's M.V. Magnier, remains on target for the Jan. 27 GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park, trainer Chad Brown confirmed Wednesday. A six-time Grade I winner for Hronis Racing and trainer John Sadler, Stellar Wind worked five furlongs in 1:10.50 at Palm Meadows last Sunday.
“So far so good,” Brown said. “She seems to be training really well.”
Stellar Wind will face a daunting task in the $16-million race, facing a competitive field that will include likely Horse of the Year Gun Runner (Candy Ride {Arg}).
“It's a very tough field,” Brown admitted. “I think she'll probably be the only filly in the field, so it's a tall order. But she's a champion and a very talented racehorse obviously. On her best day, I could see her being competitive.”
The Pegasus is scheduled to be Stellar Wind's final career start. She is expected to be bred to Triple Crown winner American Pharaoh this spring.
