Speightstown Colt Takes U.S. Debut For Callaghan

VICTORY CALL (c, 3, Speightstown–Batallosa {Arg} {MG1SW & Ch. 2yo filly-Arg}, by Southern Halo) finished fifth in his career bow going six furlongs on the all-weather surface Nov. 11 at Kempton in Great Britain for Olly Stevens. The chestnut was sent to the Simon Callaghan barn and laid up for six-plus months after and had a moderate worktab on display for this stateside debut. Treated with first-time Lasix, he showed surprising speed at 18-1 and dueled with Ideal (Super Saver) through a :21.84 quarter-mile. Edging clear into the stretch from his pace rival, he held firm in the lane to repel the bid of 2-1 second choice Vinz Clortho by a half-length in 1:15.69. Ideal got third over 6-5 favorite Accelerate. Jaw Dropper, a $550,000 purchase for the Bob Baffert barn, was a non-factor.
