Yorkton took the lead in midstretch of the Charlie Barley S. and held stiffly despite drifting out some, earning his second straight stakes win. A second-out winner on the local all-weather Sept. 17, the homebred was ninth in the Cup and Saucer S., but turned the corner this spring with a game third in the Woodstock S. and a win in the Ontario-bred Queenston S. when last seen May 13. Made a 7-2 proposition in this event, the bay stalked the pace from fourth through splits of :23.31 and :47.13 and tackled the frontrunner soon after leaving the three-sixteenths pole. Drifting steadily in the final furlong, he nevertheless held sway from Conquest Lemonraid. The winner has a yearling half-sister by Tiznow and a Curlin half-sister foaled this term.
