Rising Star Punches BC Ticket in Summer S.

'TDN Rising Star' Untamed Domain was slow to start, but fast to finish, launching a prolonged rally to annex Woodbine's GII Summer S. Sunday afternoon, punching a “Win and You're In” ticket to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar in November. It was the first graded stakes success for the Graham Motion trainee and his second win in four career starts.

Untamed Domain found trouble in upper stretch in his 5 1/2-furlong unveiling at Laurel July 2 and closed belatedly to finish fourth. He encountered similar difficulties when stretched out to 1 1/16 miles over the sod at Saratoga July 22, but proved to be much the best with a rallying 1 1/2-length score. The colt made his stakes debut in the GIII With Anticipation S. there Aug. 30, but was forced to settle for third after another poor start left him with too much work to do late.

Adding blinkers here, the son of Animal Kingdom was slowest to start and made steady progress inching closer to the lead group behind fractions of :23.89 and :47.53. Improving into about fifth position nearing the entrance to the turn, Untamed Domain was waited with and was steered out for the drive and took some time to hit top gear. Hemp Hemp Hurray finally got the better of the pace battle with an eighth of a mile to come and looked for a stride or two to have it locked up, but, despite doing his fair share of things in the wrong way, Untamed Domain kept to his task and was along in the waning strides to become the first graded winner for his freshman sire (by Leroidesanimaux {Brz}).

“This horse is a big horse–he needs a little bit of learning,” said winning rider Joe Bravo. “The whole puzzle really came together today. Graham did a great job by putting the blinkers on for the first time…I had to swing three-wide and he just levelled off so beautifully.”

Pedigree Notes:

A $90,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase, Untamed Domain is from the first crop of champion, GI Kentucky Derby winner and G1 Dubai World Cup hero Animal Kingdom, who also campaigned for trainer Graham Motion. The winner's dam, Ciao (Lear Fan), was a stakes winner and twice graded stakes-placed, while third dam Smuggly (Caro {Ire}) was a Group 1 winner in France. Ciao was bred to Air Force Blue this spring.
