Revolution For Red Hot Snitzel

China Horse Club's Teo Ah Khing leads in Russian Revolution | Bronwen Healy

Racing first-up since incurring his first career defeat at the hands of Flying Artie (Aus) (Artie Schiller) in the G1 Coolmore Stud S. during the Melbourne Spring Carnival last October, Russian Revolution led home a quinella for his red-hot sire, who was being represented by his eighth top-level scorer.

Resuming on the heels of a defeat of Saturday's G3 TAB Birthday Card S. victrix Raiment (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) in a Mar. 7 barrier trial at Randwick (video), Russian Revolution was a handful in the parade ring, so much so that he was allowed to make an early exit, then had a problem with a plate heading down to the start. Once loaded, the China Horse Club and partners' runner landed in midfield through the opening exchanges after breaking from the widest alley, but ultimately tugged Kerrin McEvoy into fourth on the back of Redzel while overracing in the boggy going. Roused to take closer order entering the straight, it was clear he was struggling to pick up in the mud, but there was no quit in him whatsoever as Redzel took over at the 200m. It appeared for most of the final furlong that Redzel would get the job done, but, in receipt of seven pounds from that year-older rival, Russian Revolution was shoved across the line narrowly best.

“We knew the weight was going to kick in at some stage and it was probably the difference over the last 100 metres,” trainer Peter Snowden told Racenet. “He's been very full of himself in the last week or so. He threw the rider yesterday and nearly threw her this morning. He's been ready to go.”

Connections are weighing the pros and cons of a run in the G1 T J Smith S. (1200m) at The Championships Apr. 1.

“It's a massive possibility,” Snowden said. “We'll just have to make sure he comes through today's run alright–he's put in a mighty performance today. The horse comes first.”

Pedigree Notes…

Russian Revolution's dam, a half-sister to the treble U.S. black-type winner Taletobetold (Tale of the Cat), is also represented by Turbo Miss (Aus) (Sebring {Aus}), who earned the first stakes success of her career with a game success in Flemington's G3 Frances Tressady S. a fortnight ago. Consigned to the 2015 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, Russian Revolution was knocked down to the China Horse Club and Michael Wallace Bloodstock for A$320,000, and two of his relations are set to go under the hammer at the Inglis Chairman's Sale Apr. 7. Newgate Farm consigns his weanling half-brother by Wandjina (Aus) as lot 11, as well as his 5-year-old half-sister Miss Interiors (Aus) (Flying Spur {Aus}), who sells in foal to Newgate's Deep Field (Aus) (Northern Meteor {Aus}) as lot 68. Ballet d'Amour is also the dam of a yearling filly by Smart Missile (Aus), who was purchased by the China Horse Club for A$300,000 at this year's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
