Racing New South Wales and the Australian Turf Club have announced significant increases to the prize-money pool for The Everest which took place for the first time at Randwick last month. The increase will be incremental over the next three years and will see the purse available rise from A$10m to A$13m in 2018 and rise a million each year after that to A$15m in 2020. The first running of The Everest was won by the Peter & Paul Snowden trained Redzel (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}) and the occasion drew a bumper crowd of over 30,000 people to Randwick. “The Everest has captured the attention of the racing world but most importantly it brought a new and younger audience to Royal Randwick,” said Australian Turf Club Chairman, Laurie Macri. “We will continue to make this race day a modern and dynamic event in the Sydney spring to attract even more first-time customers to racing,” he added. A meeting of slot holders will be held later this month to receive their feedback and to discuss how the increased prize-money will be distributed and Racing NSW Chairman Russell Balding commented, “These prize-money increases reward the loyalty and vision of the original slot holders who backed the concept. The Everest has already established itself on the racing calendar with its own personality and charisma.”
