7th-SAR, $73,000, (S), Msw, 9-4, 2yo, 6 1/2f, 1:15.71, ft. CHAMPIONOFTHENILE (c, 2, Pioneerof the Nile— Lantern Glow, by Mineshaft), purchased for $840,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale in May, led wire-to-wire to annex his second career start in dominant fashion Friday afternoon at Saratoga. The New York-bred flashed speed and leveled off to finish sixth in his grassy 5 1/2-furlong debut here Aug. 17 and was given a 4-1 shot in this first try on dirt. Making use of his experience edge in a field largely comprised of first-timers, the dark bay went straight to the front and showed the way through a quarter-mile in :22.06. Asked for more when confronted by Carysfort Reef (Frost Giant) turning for home, Championofthenile shook clear once more and posted a six-length victory. Mind Your Biscuits (Posse) rallied to complete the exacta. The winner is a half to Leave the Light On (Horse Greeley), GSW, $285,375, from the extended family of European champion and MG1SW Balanchine (Storm Bird). He attracted progressive interest in the sales ring, going for $135,000 as a KEENOV weanling and $150,000 as a KEESEP yearling before his latest sale earlier this year. Lantern Glow produced a filly by Touch Gold last year, a colt by Into Mischief this year and was bred back to Distorted Humor. Lifetime Record: 2-1-0-0, $44,165.
