Our Ivanhowe Relishes Ranvet Going

Our Ivanhowe | Racing and Sports

Our Ivanhowe was a dual Group 1 winner in his native Germany in 2014 before being purchased privately and exported to Australia, and he made a good impression in his first season with trainers Lee and Anthony Freedman, picking up a third place in the G1 Caulfield Cup in the spring of 2015. The bay picked up his first domestic Group 1 score the following May when scooping the G1 Doomben Cup over this trip. He had a four-start spring campaign last year but failed to hit the board, and was last seen finishing 17th of 24 in the G1 Melbourne Cup on Nov. 1 prior to Saturday's Ranvet.

Settling near the rear of the small pack with only the favoured Hartnell behind, Our Ivanhowe began to creep closer to the leaders approaching the 600 metre mark and swung four-wide into the lane, with Hartnell challenging on his outside. Grinding down the middle of the track, Our Ivanhowe appeared to relish the heavy going as he kicked well clear of Hartnell and fellow Group 1 winner The United States, who simply chased in vain.

“Even on hard tracks when he is feeling the ground he still gives everything,” co-trainer Anthony Freedman told racenet.com.au. “I am so proud of the horse today. He got his ground and did the job. It panned out beautifully for us. The horse deserves his day in the sun. He is a gentleman, an absolute pleasure to have and we're very grateful to have a horse who is so genuine. The agent in Germany who sold him said this is the best wet tracker in the world. Now we just have to find him another one.”

Pedigree Notes…

Our Ivanhowe is out of the G1 Preis Der Diana (German Oaks) third Indigo Girl, who is herself a half-sister to a pair of stakes winners in Germany. The third dam is the German champion 3-year-old filly Indian Pearl, who went one better than her granddaughter when finishing second in the Preis Der Diana. Indigo Girl was barren last year and in 2014, and her foal of 2015 died. Click for the free Equineline.com catalogue-style pedigree.
